thetool721's Full Review: ATV Offroad Fury for PlayStation 2
ATV Offroad Fury has to be the best ATV racing simulation I have experienced. Much care was taken when making this game, and it shows. They did a very good job all around!
For starters, I never have been really big into the Motocross / ATV type racing. My brother is big into ATVs in real life (has a Honda 400ex), but I prefer to stick to cars myself (I’m a Gran Turismo fan)! However, while I was at the local shop, I picked this one up and had to have it! I had heard good things about it, and just had to get it!
The Game
When you first fire up ATV Offroad Fury, you have a few options, depending on the type of game play you are looking for.
Training Mode allows you to get the feel of your quad. This is a must for any new rider, or else your toast on the track. Training mode doesn’t offer the fast paced action of a race, but it allows you to prepare for it.
FreeStyle Stunt Competition is exactly what it says. You get a set amount of time to pull as many airborne stunts as possible! The better the stunts, the more points to get.
Cross Country Enduro is a simulation endurance race. You are dropped in the middle of a fairly large area, and have to go from checkpoint to checkpoint to complete the race. Learn the terrain well, or else you’ll find yourself in last place!
MAXXIS Nationals allow you to compete in various racing modes for practice, or fun.
Stadium Supercross puts you right in the arena. Race indoor tracks while thousands of screaming fans cheer you on!
Pro Career mode is your key to unlocking tracks, game modes, and even a new quad! As you play through the various competitions, the game will allow you access to these new tracks. If you complete the Pro Career, you’ll get the quad!
The game itself is very realistic (for the most part). The response of the quad, and rider, are fun to watch as they bounce around the terrain. It’s even more realistic during a wreck. The quads are hilarious when they are bouncing around on the screen, just like a real quad. You can tell they spent a good amount of time on those physics!
The jumps the quads can make are fairly unrealistic at times, but I think it’s for the better. Imagine ripping across a mountain and jumping off at 90MPH, falling over 100feet down and surviving! It’s hard to believe, but still makes the game great!
One great feature about the game is called “preloading” your jump. When you come up to a jump, you can preload yourself, and get some major hang time! This is nice for those long jumps, but watch when you use it. I’ve over jumped MANY times by preloading on the wrong jumps! As I said before, learn the terrain, because you are going to need it!
The Graphics
The graphics are quite impressive. The rendering of the models is just about perfect (the Honda 400EX looks like a Honda 400EX!)! They took a good amount of care when rendering them, and it shows.
The terrain is absolutely beautiful. Miles of untamed land are your playground, and no expense was spared on design. They are various jumps, pits, and other objects at your disposal. One of the levels even offers some huge sections of rusted out oil pipe to ride through! The environmental affects are fairly wild too. Kicking up some dirt while riding around is pretty cool. And don’t forget the exhaust from the tailpipe!
The Sound
The sound track for the game is absolutely awesome. Many games lack when it comes to the soundtrack, but ATV Offroad Fury is an exception! Some of the artists include Bender, Primus, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains. This is a soundtrack you wont turn down!
The engine sounds are pretty good. They aren’t as accurate as I would have hoped (the Honda 400EX does not sound like a Honda 400EX), but it’s OK. After experiencing the rest of the game, I don’t mind compromising on the sound!
Playability
The game is very exciting, and will bring much enjoyment to the average PS2 owner! I still play my ATV Offroad fairly often, and enjoy every minute of it. It’s great to just go out there (in Freestyle Stunt Mode) and just do some crazy jumps!
Another real helper in the field of Playability would have to relate to 2 player games. You shouldn’t ride an ATV alone, and this game is no exception! Have a blast with a friend by tearing up the terrain together. Its great!
Conclusion
In conclusion, buy it! This is a great complement to anyone’s PS2 game collection. The combination of game play, graphics, and music are number one! You will enjoy every second of it!
