bmills313's Full Review: Maximo: Ghosts to Glory for PlayStation 2
Don't you just love it when you start to realize you're getting older and you long for the days of yore when video games were simpler and had a common theme and just as you get ready to give up hope that you can never relive those days using the fun new technology out there, your game comes along??!! Enter Maximo. I loved Ghosts 'n' Goblins. Who didn't? Who didn't get frustrated by that game? Maximo is a next, next generation GnG with superb graphics, gameplay and goodies.
Disclaimer:
I have not completed Maximo. I have not experienced carpal tunnel syndrome, bloodshot eyes, cramping in my legs from playing this game for days on end. I have played occasionally for a few hours at a time and have advanced slower than the average bear. With that out of the way, read on if you'd like...
What I like:
I like the fact that this game is a 21st century blast from the past. Is it just like Ghosts n Goblins in gameplay, story and difficulty? YES!!! Some people may not like that, but you know the facts when you look at the back of the box and read the synopsis: take it or leave it. The graphics and animation are wonderful; what an updated 3D, vintage side-scrolling Nintendo game should look like. The controls are great but can get a little confusing at times; nothing a couple hours practicing on the first few levels can't cure. I find the game to be, overall, a very appealing game. This game has some real lasting appeal, for those looking for more than a weekend of fun. You'll find yourself playing longer than you had intended and getting into the game much more than you wanted. I bought this game on my way home from an early day at work due to being very sick...kicking back with some Ramen and Sprite and Maximo was all I needed! Thank goodness the PS2 has the ability to save your game, unlike your training-wheels game GnG on NES!
What I don't like:
The camera can be annoying at times and really cause problems. It seems there are times when you have to make a "leap of faith" because the camera won't rotate or you endanger falling from your perch if you move that ever-so-tiny amount to make the camera change.
The game is hard. This isn't so much a problem with the game, just an honest observation that this will be one of the harder PS2 games you own. If you're looking for a weekend rental you can beat, look elsewhere.
Conclusion:
In all, Maximo is what happens when you grow up and move out of your parents house and our courageous knight from Ghost n Goblins grows up and moves out of the NES and onto the PS2. A great "flashback" game that will provide hours of fun, frustration and flashbacks to when GnG started and there was that annoying sound of the ghosts falling down to meet you head on. Let's hope we get a 21st century version of Kid Icarus!
