The Bottom Line: It's the same old Resident Evil, but with much better graphics, sound, and story. And yet, it draws you in making you want to stay up late...and kill some zombies!
guru_tweaker's Full Review: Resident Evil: Code Veronica X for PlayStation 2
It's a good thing that video games don't tend to follow the examples of movies when it comes to sequels. I mean, how many times can a burnt, finger-bladed phantom nightmare dweller be defeated and come back for more before you start writing your own scripts for him (that was supposed to be Freddy Krueger lead, but it didn't go over well).
The Resident Evil name has always been my automatic buy for video game systems. But after the third installment and the somewhat overplayed feel of the series, I started wondering if I would need to read the reviews first. Even still, Resident Evil Code: Veronica X was one of the first games for Playstation 2 that I knew I would buy.
If you're like and didn't experience the Dreamcast version, the first thing you'll want to know is where does this version take place in the series. The story follows Claire Redfield after Resident Evil 2 still searching for her brother, Chris. The location is completely different, however. A much wider feel to the game is presented on the Island of Umbrella's headquarters. This is only the start because you will explore more than one location (and player).
The graphics in the game are beautiful. The sound is awesome. It's amazing what a console upgrade can do for the atmosphere possibilities. One of the more exciting changes is absence of static pre-rendered screens. Everything scrolls and pivots to the movement of the character within each room. Camera angles still vary to each room/section depending on what will suit the task at hand (or what monster they want to send after you). Details are much improved, especially during the in-game movies. Lighting also plays an important role to involve the player. If you have a surround system, you will really appreciate how well the environmental sounds and music were done. Play this in a dark room, you'll know what I mean :)
Controls are the same for the most part. A quick 180 degree move has been added and auto aiming when you first point your weapon (you still have to pivot if they linger beyond your aim). No dodging is possible like in Nemesis, but you don't really need it.
I won't mention the cheesy voice acting. I guess it wouldn't be Resident Evil without it. Fun Factor is a plus, though. I'll admit, it started slow because of the familiarity with Resident Evil. You have to give it a little time to get into the story so you don't feel like you've played this game three or four times before on a different system.
Finally, we can't forget how the replay value factored in to each Resident Evil. New costumes, weapons, and characters for better or multiple completed games. This ensures you'll want to go through it a few times at least, just to see what the rocket launcher looks like!!
Overall, I am glad I bought it. It promises to be long and involving filled with turns and twists, just like the main boss at the end is sure to be.
