imprimis2's Full Review: Resident Evil: Code Veronica X for PlayStation 2
If you liked ANY of the previous Resident Evil games, such as Resident Evil 1, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, or Resident Evil: Survivor, then you will LOVE Resident Evil: Code Veronica X!
If you do not know the history of Resident Evil, we will go through it now.
The first Resident Evil was released by Capcom a few years ago....(around 1996). The beginning of this series would begin a new revolution for Capcom. The revolution of the Survival Horror games era. Resident Evil and Resident Evil: Director's Cut (both the same game) started a craze with action and suspense lovers across the U.S. and Japan (RE was called Biohazard in Japan).
In this first game, you were a part of a special tactics group called S.T.A.R.S (Special Tactics and Rescue Squad), and you were assigned to investigate a mansion in the mountains of Raccoon City, a zombie infested town. You are here to research the T-Virus, created by an evil company called Umbrella, that causes unimaginable and grotesque mutations in people, creatures, insects, virtually everything. This turns them into blood-sucking zombies that will do anything to kill you.
But, you don't know that when you first step into the mansion. You have to find it all out for yourself. You can play as either a girl named Jill, or a man named Chris in this first game.
You will search the gigantic mansion and unlock doors, find lighters, find herbs to heal you from zombies tearing away at your neck, and much more. There are many dark hallways, and many zombies and even rabid dogs waiting around the corner to have a feast on your blood. Hopefully you can escape from this mansion with some answers. This game takes about 8 hours to complete, and you'll like every bit of this hellish-like environment. There are also some secret bosses and hallways that you will have to discover on your own.
The game then progresses to Resident Evil 2, where you play as a different character, either Claire, or Leon. This time, you'll go through the town of Raccoon City, trying to gain more information on this dreaded T-Virus. You will spend a large portion of the game in the Raccoon City Police Department, where you'll encounter some new creatures infested with the T-Virus. By the way, the game is quite a bit harder this time. The zombies are faster, the creatures are tougher, and the bosses are meaner. You'll encounter more bosses, and you'll also find tougher puzzles.
Next, we progress to Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. After Claire escapes from Raccoon City, Jill (the one you played with in Resident Evil 1) has to escape from Raccoon City. After all that she's been through, there's no way in hell she's going to stay here. The game is much tougher here, there are again more creatures, more keys to find, more doors to unlock, more places to discover, and in this game, you'll find a friend or two who will help you along the way. There is also another creature called the Nemesis who will chase you around and swipe at you whenever he gets the chance. You will have to fight him at least three times in the game, and he's one tough guy.
Now, we will get to Resident Evil: Code Veronica X.
After Claire Redfield (Same claire as in RE 2) survived the horrible experience in Raccoon City, she must now search for clues as to where her missing brother, Chris is. She will be chased by tougher zombies, more creatures, and uglier and grotesque mutations. You will find that Umbrella has many secrets still uncovered, and that Raccoon City was just a nursery for zombies compared to the island Claire must trek across.
This game is much better than all three of the previous games. Why? The monsters are more difficult, the graphics are sharper than ever, providing for a very realistic experience. The sound is surreal compared to its predecessors. The environment, and the size of the game overall is HUGE compared to the other Resident Evil games. The game is also a bit scarier than the others, and, personally, I have been scared more than once watching the same videos!
You'll awaken as Claire, to the rumblings of attacks on the island. You'll then find yourself in a prison cell, and you'll also meet a friend who will help you out of it. Later in the game, you'll have to help this friend for what he did to you, but, you can find that out for yourself as well.
You'll have to find your way across this island, going from a prison, to an airport, to a palace, to a private residence and a military training facility before you even LEAVE the island. Be prepared for one hell of a fight, and one hell of a long game. The zombies' textures are absolutely fabulous, and they really do look like zombies on this game. You'll find yourself continually thinking, "Dang, this place looks like a real messed up place!" and you'll be right of course.
There are a couple of friends who will help you along the way, but.......even scarier......you'll encounter old enemies, such as the Tyrant, and you'll even encounter......(gasp) Albert Wesker! He's not dead, folks.
I'm going to leave the rest of this game up to you, and I hope I have you intrigued. You'll really want to pick this one up as well, because if you really love the RE series, this one will not let you down.
Be prepared to be scared, and be on your guard constantly!
