theliberator's Full Review: Resident Evil: Code Veronica X for PlayStation 2
One of the greatest miscarrages of justice took place about a year and a half ago, when Capcom announced plans to release a Dreamcast-only Resident Evil title. That grave injustice was, however, immediately righted with the PS2 release of Resident Evil - CODE: Veronica - X.
Now lets get one thing straight... there are only two differences between the PS2 version and the year older Dreamcast version.
These are that the PS2 version has:
i)A few new cinematics.
ii)An X.
Now in all fairness, X's are very cool, but to add one to the end of this title is somewhat of a mystery to me, as the game itself, is not that much different. The basic story is the same and the new cutscenes don't change that, all they do is reveal a bit more info about why certain characters are actually in the game. This is information that was not contained in the Dreacast version.
On the subject of the plot, Resident Evil veterans probably want to know what it is. Now, we are all farmiliar with Claire Redfield from RE2. Her search for her brother, Chris,(from the original game) led her to a secret Umbrella lab in Paris, where she was arrested and sent to wait out her life in a cell on a remote island. It is not long, however, before Zombies take over and Claire has to find a way to escape. It's all pretty basic stuff and it's not exactly original.
The graphics, while good, don't match up to some of the newer titles such as Devil May Cry (which you get a free demo of when you buy CODE: Veronica). The 3D backgrounds are a change from the usual pre-rendered backdrops, and are quite pleasently surprising. They are dark, gloomy and occasionaly violent and give the game a great appearance overall. Character and enemy models are exemplary, with incredible attention to detail and great textures and skins.
The high point of any RE game is the fear factor. This addition to the series IS scary, but it seems that Capcom have focused more on the action side of things rather than making you scared. This may disappoint fans, but there are still a lot of chills, which are backed up by the terrifying soundtrack.
The sounds are great. Ambient noises make for some terrifying moments, whereas weapon sounds are spot on. The music is also remarkable, creating a 'what's going to happen next' feeling. The voice acting is reasonable, especially when compared to the original, but it is still not as impressive as the likes of Max Payne. As I've always said, though... 'Resident Evil would not be what it is without bad acting.'
My only major gripe with the game is the control system, and how it has changed. You have no new moves to learn and are basically playing an updated version of one of the older RE titles. I put the game on, expecting to press square to make Claire run, and circle to open my inventory. Capcom have, however, not made it that simple, and it may take a while for fans to get used to the new system. However, once they do, they are in for an over the top horror thrill, with perhaps the best of the Resident Evil titles.
Gameplay:
It takes absolutely ages to finish and will have you hooked for weeks, if not months.
Graphics:
Good, considering it is almost exactly the same as the year old DC version.
Replay Value:
None. You won't want to go back and do it again. Thankfully it takes a while the first time through. You also get a mini game to keep you interested.
Sound:
Truly terrifying ambient effects and superbly scary background music.
