| anastacya's Full Review: Silent Hill 2 for PlayStation 2 |
My boyfriend and I received Silent Hill 2 for our PS2 for Christmas. We had to submit a list of five potential candidates, and this is what Santa decided to leave for us. Thus I cannot really declare a "Value for your money" part with much honesty. As a gift, it was a wonderful choice.
If you want to be scared (expletive), this game is the choice for you. I personally think it is creepier than the Resident Evil series, as the plot for Silent Hill 2 makes even the most stalwart of gamers want to play with the light on. The monsters themselves are not particularly devilish, as there are only four or five basic types. It is the riddles and the storyline that makes a flashlight a necessity while playing. Imagine receiving a letter from your dead wife, asking you to come to a town and meet in their "secret place". Hopelessly in love with Mary (your wife) you go there, wishing to find your lost love, who died from a horrible, disfiguring disease.
While in Silent Hill (the town) you come across some various eccentric (mildly phrased) people, who have also been mysteriously summoned to the town. Ironically, these people do not see the creatures you are killing, and all of them seem to be fighting something on their own.
Without giving away the plot, Silent Hill 2 brings the gamer through an intriguing plot with a horrid twist at the end. The whole story has a very deep meaning, and veterans of Silent Hill from PSone will rememember the evil from the town, and will not be disappointed upon their return.
The graphics are absolutely beautiful. While a little bit sketchy sometimes (the perpetual fog of the town is quite frustrating) the overall quality of the backgrounds and the key players is quite well done. The music is excellent in elevating the creep factor, and the various monsters are interesting enough to keep you on your toes.
The only complaint I have is the control system; those familiar with the controls of Resident Evil or Tomb Raider will remember the rotate-and-steer method, which can be a little difficult to get used to if you are used to traditional movement on other games. That aside, the game itself is engrossing and well-thought. Playing on easy will result in a fast ending, but the replay value and the different endings that remain will surely never leave much dust on the jacket of this one.
Overall, I recommend this game for mature gamers, as anyone younger might have some serious nightmares for a long time.
