unluckyjw's Full Review: Swing Away Golf for PlayStation 2
“Is this a Hot Shots clone or what?” That’s what my friend said when we first saw this game at the store. Well, it’s almost like Hot Shots. The cartoon-like quality for the courses and characters is there, along with unlocking hidden characters and such, but the presentation is a bit different…
I didn’t buy this game. My roommate rented it and loved it so much he went out and bought it, even though I own the PS2. What I saw didn’t really impress me… just regular old golf, and if it is a launch title, it probably won’t be too in depth, etc… My roommate talked so much about it, I finally decided to sit down and try the darn thing. I have to say, it’s a pretty damn good game.
The presentation is a little different. You of course have the option of playing a quick round or to practice or whatever, but there is a story mode. You pick a character, but are able to rename the character, and rearrange his/her stats to your own liking, which to me is very cool. As you start your mode, it gauges time in months. Every month you can select to play is a certain tourney or play a match with a friend you’ve met on the course. You start as an amateur and work your way up to a pro, ala Tin Cup style. As you play rounds, you accumulate points and money. The points you use to add your traits, being distance, accuracy, etc. so you get better with the amount of rounds you play. The money you receive you can spend in the shop, to buy better balls, clubs, shoes, bags, whatever. You can choose what kind of caddy you want to have giving you advice. All in all, the gameplay is fun and somewhat addicting.
The graphics are actually pretty good. When you play the first course, you see mountains and valleys it looks pretty real. Like I said, it’s a cartoon-style game, but the course layout and graphics don’t make it look that way. The music is pretty decent too. I usually turn off the sound and listen to a CD or the radio when I play this type of game, but not for Swing Away. The music is somehow addicting to me, and as I write this review, it’s playing in my head.
I must say I didn’t really give this game a chance. This is the fourth game I have reviewed, am I am quickly realizing that the system makes the game. I have yet to play a poor title on the PS2, and Swing Away Golf is no exception. I was very pleased with this title.
A light-hearted golfing title from the experts at T&E Soft, Swing Away Golf was one of the first sports titles announced for the PlayStation 2 and all...More at GameQuest Direct. com
