The Bottom Line: Good graphics, but hard to play and therefore hard to really get 'into'. But master the gameplay, and there's no bounds to what you can do.
limeybrit9's Full Review: Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2 for PlayStation 2
Maybe I'm just biased after the likes of Tony Hawk ProSkater 3, which undoubtedly this game is often compared to, but I wasn't really all that impressed. The games, other than both being based on skate parks and ramps, essentially have no similarities and unfortunately, Mirra failed to pick up on one of THPS3's most enjoyable characteristics... ease of learning. Some lack of consistencies in the game make for completely grasping the physics somewhat difficult... it's frustrating to get an "Awkward landing" fall on something that you thought was lined up perfectly, and then land something that looks like you were completely sideways. Also, am I the only one who really misses the balance bars on rails? Sure, you can maintain balance without them, but it's certainly harder on the beginner.
Tricks... all I can say is wow. Some of those tricks look absolutely amazing. Some are a little intricate... okay well they're extremely intricate. Combinations of four directional movements followed by one of the two "action" buttons produce an array of different tricks... but not more than other games that simply use combinations of only two directional movements (that seem to use the idea that "up-right" is different from "up, right").
Progressing through the levels is relatively easy, although finding some of the goals can prove to be arduous. You really have to freeride around and figure out what the different areas are called to be able to navigate your way around... but don't worry, they're usually marked. The respect points idea is a little different... works though, I guess. My only problem with it is the emphasis on attaining all gaps, and there are a whole lot of them. That, and I had opened up 5 levels before I even got a new bike. 2 player mode is great fun with wipeout challenges, and the ability to compete for longest and highest jumps. And as far as the park editor? Don't even waste your time.
All in all, a fun game, but it does take a while to learn, and doesn't feel as addictive as other games due to a relatively high frustration level in the beginning.
