mr_chupon99's Full Review: Project Eden for PlayStation 2
Seriously, this game needs help. Sure it's cool that you control 4 different characters with their own unique skill. Apparently the training budget is quite low, so people can only learn how to do one thing. Carter - the leader of the group - can do absolutely nothing useful. He gets to open higher access doors and talk to important people. I think it's a comment on the expendability of management.
The graphics of the game resembles the dated look of Unreal Tournament's engine, only with more glitches. You get constant slowdown in the game which is 100% the developers faults; I have seen what the PS2 is capable of, and it's a lot more than this game does. I feel like this game was aspiring to be cool, but fell short, big time. Maybe it's because I've been playing a lot of good games lately...maybe it's just because Project Eden wasn't all that good.
The weapons in this game say one thing: If any person in the game went up against a US commando, they'd be dead in under a second. You're handgun is weaker than a paintball gun, and the disc launcher seems to be more of a gimmick than a weapon. The only useful weapon are the missiles, and only one member of your team gets them. Seriously, an M16 or AK47 would clean house in this game compared to the futuristic junk you get stuck with.
The game plays out with around 90% puzzles, and 10% combat. With only 3 different skills at your disposal, don't expect to be pulling your hair out until the puzzles aren't given any explanation whatsoever. The other problem is that there's very little motivation to keep you going through the game, This is probably due to the puzzle/combat ratio.
The control" wi the game are 1st/3rd person view with the analog joystick pads. In other words, it sucks. 3rd person is at a terrible angle because of the camera positioning. 1st person is terrible because you simply need a keyboard/mouse config to adequately control. There are all sorts of quirks to the control such as backwards doesn't make you backpedal, but turn around and go the other way. All in all, it's a good thing you don't need to do any careful manoevering, or else you'd go mad with frustration. However, the game is not fun to control at all. Devil May Cry was fun. Ico was fun. Project Eden is very much not fun.
Deathmatches were incredibly boring with a friend because of the lack of weapons in the game. It's sad when a racing game (Extreme G) has more weapons than a 1st person shooter. The co-op mode isn't that good either, because you're just solving puzzles together, rather than having a good shoot out. Now, don't get me wrong, I like puzzles. But this isn't the game for them.
With all the amazing games out there right now, I wouldn't even recommend renting this. There's better things to spend money on out there.
