bassoongod's Full Review: Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 for PlayStation 2
The original soul reaver has to be the second best game I have ever played... and no, this isn't the third.
First off, let me tell you how this game is better than the original. First, the graphics (duh! it is on playstation 2) which now include birds, rats, and swamps filled not only with different weather conditions, but also with muck that grabs hold of you. Second, the movies in this game are breath-taking! Amazing! 4 stars! And there are a lot of them... if I were to guess, there is probably about an hour and a half of movies. Third, battles are a lot more difficult. Fourth, there is a lot more in the way of character development. Fifth and finally, the puzzles are a lot harder, and ultimately a lot better.
Let's look at the cons. First, the controls are different, and not as user friendly. Moreover, for the second part, things earned in the original game like glyphs and the fire reaver have been removed from you without reason... you even have to go and get the fire reaver again! Third, you have to do a lot of backtracking. Back and forth over the same bit of space many many frusterating times... THERE ARE NO WARP GATES. Fourth, although you still cannot die, you don't start back at any focal point. So, since this is true, and there are no warp gates, they won't let you save JUST ANYWHERE like you could in the last game. There are only about 6 save points in the entire game which makes it difficult to play unless you have time to just sit down and go. Fifth, the mutants... they are in the future... they are the dumbest enemies I have ever seen in a game... you will see when you play it! Sixth... well... it is really really short! I beat the game in about 9 or 10 total hours... including the movies which are an hour and a half.
I still liked this game, but again, like the original... there was no ending which is really frusterating! The purpose of the first game was to get you out of your current time and make you able to see the bigger picture, thus leading you into the second game. The purpose of this game is to alter the timeline and make an exception in history, leading you into the third game. There is a LOT of story development here... I just really wish it was longer!
