A.E.B.'s Full Review: Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 for PlayStation 2
Unlike many other PS2 games I have played, Soul Reaver 2 relatively approachable. Now I say relatively, because the controller is still rather complex, but the screen view doesn't change uncontrollably as is the case with a number of other games (e.g. Devil May Cry). During the actual game play, there are a couple points where the game rather rudely dumps you off with no indication of where to go or what to do, but it doesn't happen enough to make the game frustrating.
The story is easy enough to follow that it is managable for a video game, but complex enough to put this game leaps ahead of it's competetors who tend to limit the conversation to bosses and occasional brief interludes. The graphics, of course, are amazing in both the action and the video interludes.
Overall, Soul Reaver 2 is a pretty engaging game with a decent plot that picks up from Soul Reaver. If you need a refresher in Soul Reaver events like I did, there are clips and a time line to help you out, along with some funny outtakes from the people who did the voices. The new technology has definitely enhanced the total gaming experience, although (personal gripe here), I liked the less complicated controls of the Legacy of Kain so that I could to pay less attention to the controller and more attention to the storyline. I understand the appeal of the 3-D-every-button-does-10-things game, it just doesn't really appeal to me.
Even with my personal prejudice, I thought the game was great and I couldn't get up for hours the first time I sat down with it. I am now anxiously awaiting Blood Omen 2 (which I have been hoping would come out since I beat the legacy of Kain 4 or 5 years ago), which really should have come out before either of the Soul Reavers, but didn't. I wonder how that story will go, seeing as much of it was apparently revealed in this game. Then again, you never know what happens when you start to twist time, and this game does a great job of that. I just hope they will resurrect a little of Kain's old style and use the missing middle piece to fit it all together.
