phungus's Full Review: Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 for PlayStation 2
Soul Reaver 2 is the first game I’ve ever played where the cutscenes in between levels take longer to watch than it does to actually play through the level itself. This game is more like an interactive movie, and it gets boring quickly. To make matters worse, you can only save your game at certain spots, and there is no way to skip over the countless long movies in between the actual gameplay. This means you better have a lot of time set aside to play this, or else you will have to do certain things over and over again.
I found Soul Reaver 2 to be incredibly boring. I’ve played it for over 30 minutes and about 20 of those minutes was spent watching the in-game movies or cutscenes. The gameplay itself is boring and confusing, and its almost impossible to keep up with your target. Also, the game graphics are too dark in some places, and there is nothing in the game to adjust brightness, and I hate having to change the settings on my TV.
All in all, Soul Reaver 2 is a boring piece of junk, in my opinion. If I wanted to watch a cartoon, I’d have rented a cartoon.
Graphic
The graphics in Soul Reaver 2 are quite good, especially during the movie sequences. However, they are too dark in some places. There is nothing in the game itself to adjust brightness or gamma, which means you will have to do it on your TV, which in turn means you’ll have to adjust the TV back when you are finished with the game. I shouldn’t have to do that.
Sound
The voice acting in this game is very nice. The characters have a gothic kind of pseudo-english accent stereotypical of vampires. However, the music is almost non-existent and mixed at such a low volume that you hardly hear it. It is meant to be ambient, but just adds to the boringness of this game.
Gameplay
This is a third person action game, like Tomb Raider. The problem here is that your opponents move around so much that it is almost impossible to keep up with your target. When you go into a fight, you basically just start hitting buttons as fast as you can and hope that you hit something. Also, there aren’t really any special moves to be done, other than punch and kick and a few others.
You can only save your game in certain spots in the game, and these spots are sparse. This type of save-game feature is something that I absolutely cannot stand and I refuse to play games that use this. For that reason, I don’t like the Resident Evil games, although the RE games allow you to save more often. Not everyone has 30-40 minutes to set aside and be able to play a game. Some of us just have a short break to get in some game time, then we have other things to do.
Overall
Soul Reaver 2 is the kind of game that exemplifies why good graphics and sound don’t make up for boring gameplay. Players of the original Soul Reaver may get more out of this than I did, but you better rent this before you buy it.
