ChromeKiller's Full Review: Red Faction for PlayStation 2
Ready for the shooter of the year? If you're not, just run away crying. Red Faction is enlisting members now to come in and revolt against Ultor, the mighty and yet dangerous company that's killing miners. Thousands of people are already enabled with the guns that this game has to offer. Are you going to be one of them?
There is a revolution at stake. Parker, a nobody miner, thought he wanted something new in his life. He was well-educated, raised properly, but felt that he had something missing. Parker heard about a mining company called Ultor who was recruiting people to sign up for their mining benefits. If you became a miner on Mars, you'll receive a benefit package and a bright future. But once you're there, there is no escape. This is where the game takes place... in Parker's rundown woes. One day, a guard is giving one miner a hard time. The next thing that you know, a revolution against the company Ultor is breaking out. Eos, a mysteriously named person who is posting up signs about a revolution, has started this incentive toward the enemy. All the revolution needs now is a spark. The main thing that Ultor is responsible for is not just bunk beds that are shared by more than one person or the ten-hour work shifts; there is also a plague going around that no one knows how or why it exists. But for sure, Ultor has something to do with this disease. As Parker, the miner, you're going to join the revolution and find out some of the answers for yourself with the help of an Ultor hacker-turned-traitor, Hendrix, as he guides you through your suit's head set. Join the revolution now! It's better red than dead....
The gameplay in Red Faction is awesome! You don't get much of a multiplayer mode without online compatibility, but the first-player stuff is still fantastic! In multiplayer mode, you can go up against a friend, or up to six AI characters, where you'll have your choice of character to play. Selectable player options include some kind of guard or Parker himself in different outfits. Red Faction's control scheme is sort of like TimeSplitters, but a hell of a lot better. The 'R1' key is for firing, the 'L1' key is used for ascending ladders, the 'L2' key is for descending ladders, and the 'R2' key is used for a weapon's secondary function. That's right, most weapons have a second purpose to them. To choose your weapon, if you already have a weapon selected, you'll use either the 'circle' or the 'square' button to scroll through the cycle. The 'triangle' button is used to reload, and the 'X' is to press buttons or to talk to people. The analog sticks are used for movement and aiming, the directional pad's right key is used to view past dialogue, and the left is used to holster and sheathe a weapon. So, just about every key has a function. Now, let me explain the secondary button feature a little better. If for example you're using the flamethrower, you'd probably think that the weapon is just a flamethrower, right? Wrong! If you were to activate this option, the gas canister will become an incendiary bomb that blows up in a fiery mess. Cool!
Unlike other first-person shooters, Red Faction adds an emphasis on the bullet hole mark feature left in walls. Now, instead of using the door, use the wall to get through! The game packs a lot of weapons (fifteen, to be exact), and some of those weapons are explosive. For instance, if you're using the remote detonator, you can throw one onto the wall, walk away, and blow a sizable hole that lets you walk right into the blast radius. Continue to do so, and soon you'll have a virtual tunnel thanks to the Geo-Mod technology that THQ and Volition are behind. One other interesting concept to the game is that the enemy not only fires, but in fact, they'll physically react to your gun fire. All of the AI - both guards and a medical staff - have a vocabulary programmed to respond to either being shot with a bullet, or just intimidated by your gun being present. Guards will usually run away once you have the upper hand in a gun fight, yelling, "I give up!" The medical staff and other harmless AI will duck and cower, and even sometimes press the alarm as they shout at you to get away from them. More so, other AI includes your mining buddies. Throughout the game, the other miners will help you fire at the enemies along side of you. You can help them out, or watch them perish.
With tons of vehicles (land, sea, and even air), and tons of weapons (chainguns, rocket launchers, even a riot shield and stick), this is one game that you cannot miss out on! Red Faction is not just your typical FPS game either. There's a great story to follow, with added cut scenes. It's the first FPS of its kind - one that simply cannot be missed out on.
