Remember back in the heyday of video games when they were fun? Whether it was a yellow circle chasing ghosts and eating white dots, or a line-drawn space ship trying to survive a barrage of asteroids, the focus was on game play. Game designers tried to create a game that would capture your mind, challenge your reflexes, and keep brining you back for more.
For the most part, modern games have left this concept behind. The focus seems to be on things like FPS, 3D rendering, realistic damage modeling, and big explosions. While I enjoy the visual beauty of these games, they often leave me flat. Fuzion Frenzy is not one of these games.
Fuzion Frenzy is a collection of 45 mini-games, most of which are fantastically fun. There are music-based timing contests, hectic racing matches, group battles in various vehicles, and button-mashing melees (to name a few). Though little new ground is broken in the game play realm, the games are genuinely fun. Most are simple enough to learn in two tries, but complex enough to keep you trying again and again.
This quick learning curve is important. Fuzion Frenzy is what most would call a party game, intended for multi-player use. In fact, I’ve found playing the game alone to be a bit unsatisfying. However, add up to 3 other players and you’ve got a recipe for yelling, taunting and laughing. At my house, we’ve had players from 20 to 60 years of age playing, each of them catching on to at least some games and enjoying themselves.
My only complaint about Fuzion Frenzy is that although game play is its focus, it attempts to be competitive in the other arenas I mentioned earlier (and has to be “pretty”, as it was an Xbox release title). For the most part it succeeds in showing off the Xbox hardware, but the constantly moving camera can sometimes get out of whack, leaving the players slightly disoriented or lost. More than once I’ve lost track of my character and suffered defeat.
That aside, the graphics are quite good, controls are responsive, and menus understandable. Fuzion Frenzy fits its niche perfectly.
