everlasting18's Full Review: NFL Fever 2002 for Xbox
Another competitor fighting for the title of best football game of the year. Much like the rest of the 2002 football games out there Fever has the options of Dynasty (much like the franchise mode of Madden), All-Time Challenge, practice, single game, season, and playoff. Basically all the football games have the same options now so what it comes down to is graphics, and gameplay.
Fever stands up to the competion of Madden but it takes it a step further by smaking Madden around, flipping him upside down and flat on his a$$. (pardon that but I love this game)
Microsoft has created a game that brings to the table what most football games can't and that is the option for both arcade and simulation. You can play a fast paced jam packed hit-a-thon or you can play it smart and logical.
MS Fever has also done something thought to be impossible at one point and that is to create a football game for a console that hits on the running game the first time out of the gate. Trust me the running game in this one fills so fluid it's like water in your hand. The reaction of the opposing team is realistic to the run game if you have a strong right side O-line then they anticipate a run to the right and so on and so forth.
As for the passing game this was another bulls-eye the passing mechanics felt awesome and the secondary on the other team really reacted life-like to your passing attack and I don't mean they seem to stick to you no matter what the mis-match was, I mean if you watch the game closely you will see players like Randy Moss and Terrel Owen getting doubled teamed at the line of scrimmage trying to keep them from getting down field but if you get lucky and they break you get to pick the D apart which of course opens up you run attack.
The A.I. of this game is really balanced and in most cases you will find that it is hard to win a game unless you establish both the run game and the pass game.
Now onto the graphics while all next gen football games offer great graphics Fever once again tops this off by added some cool player animations. The grass is the best I have ever seen if you have played tony hawk and seen the grass in that game it's that good. The stadiums in the game are precise and well detailed right down to the billboards and the clocks. The player models are fantastic and look very much like their life like counterparts.
All the players in this game look the part when an offensive lineman lines up you can actually see his gut hanging over pants.
Sound of course as with all of the Xbox's games is great I just love hearing my QB barking out plays and audibles. You can hear the two teams as the cheer or they let out yells of pain or disgust. The crowd is another thing that draws you deep into this game if you have surround sound you can really enjoy this as you can actually hear the echoes through-out the stadiums.
Control on the game is nice tight and precise unlike Madden you don't have that momentum factor so this lets you turn on a dime and make some pretty cool moves to fool the defense. You have your standard spin, juke, speed burst, stiff arm, and hurdle. And on defense you have the swim move, strip, dive, and tackle.
All in all this the best football game I have played the second is the NFL2k series which seems to be getting better and better and in a distant third there is Madden.
