brittanytg's Full Review: The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind for Xbox
Role Playing Games are, for all intensive purposes, my favorite type of game. Morrowind was the very first game that I bought for my Xbox, and since it was new at the time, I paid the whole 50 bucks for it.
The game starts out interestingly, putting plot into the way that you create your main character. There is a variety of races/species to choose from, from elf to human, cat-like creature to orc, and everything in between. Each race has it's own pros and cons. For example, Elves are better at magic, and lizards can breathe under water.
Next, as in most RPG's, you get to choose your strengths (and therefore your weaknesses) and a few other things that predict what kind of person (or creature) you are. You can also dictate how your character looks (face shapes and hair styles) and it's gender. This, for me, is so much fun...I could just create different characters all day long. For this feature alone, the game was worth the money.
This game is graphically amazing. The weather changes as you walk around and explore the vast worlds, creating moods and inspiration.
You explore; talk to the other beings in the town. You find items and take on small quests to better the area that you are currently traveling through, and also gain experience in the process. Most quests also reward you with the cash.
The currency can get annoying. Not because of the actual currency itself, but because items are so expensive, and cash is so hard to come by! On the plus side of this however, random things that you pick up in the forest can be worth money, not costing you anything to aquire and sell.
So, I go to a shop of some kind in one of the beautiful towns, and I decide that I need a good sword and some armor. HA! For this, be prepared to wait a few weeks and work many a mini-quest obtaining the cash to do so. So, I'm out to conquer the free world with only the clothes on my back.
I'm a big fan of the "Fallout" series, an RPG game for the PC, so I expected to make some friends along the way or at least have some NPC (non-player characters) help in the game. I didn't. This game is the ultimate "lone wolf" game. Sometimes though, I like it that way. NPC's tend to get in the way.
Since cash is so hard to come by, I decide to walk to the next town along the way instead of taking a boat or a bug (the two main means of transportation in the game, which also cost money as you may have guessed). Along the way, there are signs to point me in the right direction and there's a very detailed map, so it's not hard to get where I want to go. Be careful though, you will, however, come across the occassional strange creature that wants to eat you, so you'll have to kill it.
The music changes when you are about to engage in battle, making the player feel almost entirely immersed. You feel excited and strong, and you try to utilize all you have learned about fighting...and then you die after one or two hard hits from an over-grown warthog. Dissappointing to say the least. Fighting is very awkward in this game, especially if you're fighting more than one creature or person at a time.
After doing this for a few weeks, I conclude that my character is a weakling, an intelligent wuss that can't throw a punch to save his life. I decided to start the whole game over.
This time, I create a much stronger but dumber character, one that can really kick butt. I do better in combat sequences now, but not so hot in dialogue and getting people to like me.
I become a member of the theives guild, because it seems economically promising. This stuff matters. Guilds are like clubs, but you have to be careful because many guilds are in competitions with other guilds, and just like gangs in the real world, if one guild recognizes you as a member of another guild, they won't like you and could even be violent towards you. This aspect of the game is fantastically fun, playing guilds against each other and plotting revenge.
Generally speaking, this game is great. It's huge, for lack of a better word. The environment that you are in is actually so large that it has taken me over a year just to see it all, and I haven't completed many quests and haven't even touched on the main quest. Huge is really the best word I can think of.
Don't look to this game as an easy, beat-in-a-month movie gallery rental. You'd have to rent it a million times to play it to its full capacity. However, if you're an RPG fan, it is a great buy, especially at the recently reduced price.
I've had the game for over 2 years now, and while I still haven't completed the main quest, I still have fun with it.
DON'T buy this game if you like high-paced non-stop action and constant fighting. You'll be walking around a lot, and gathering information a lot.
DO buy this game if you like vastly compelling and choice-filled RPG games in which you can be anyone, go anywhere and do anything.
