Pros: Refreshes, rehydrates, quenches thirst. Excellent choice for working out, playing sports or recovering from illness.
Cons: May not be appropriate for those watching sodium content
It is important to keep your body hydrated while working out, playing sports, recovering from illness, or even just trying to survive the hot weather. While water can be extremely beneficial in preventing dehydration, Gatorade goes one step further by replacing lost electrolytes as well as the water lost during perspiration or illness.
Around my house, Gatorade is a favorite drink, and Fruit Punch Gatorade is one flavor that everyone in the house enjoys. Although it is available in assorted sizes, I often buy the 32 ounce size because it is the least expensive per ounce, saving me money even over the larger 64 ounce jugs. Because everyone in the house likes this flavor, I generally buy these by the case. Even though I prefer the 20 ounce size as a take along drink, the 32 ounce works fairly well too, and really isn't too much when you really need to push the fluids to prevent dehydration. To enjoy this beverage you should shake well before opening, and refrigerate any unused portion.
There are just 30 calories in a one cup serving of Gatorade, which is much lower than most other sports drinks and soft drinks. It is an excellent choice when plain water doesn't do enough to quench your thirst. One thing that should be noted though is that a serving of Gatorade contains 160mg of sodium which is a good for replenishing lost fluids and electrolytes, however less active people and those with certain health conditions should consume with caution because excessive sodium consumption can cause problems including swelling, water retention and hypertension.
Gatorade comes in a variety of flavors including orange, lemonade, xtremo citrus cooler, frost, rain, lemon-lime, and several others. Most of them are pretty good with a slightly sweet taste that isn't too sweet. Gatorade Sports drinks are a satisfying drink that can be enjoyed by both children and and adults.
Not surprisingly the main ingredient is water, which is one of the best thirst quenchers, and one of the best hydrators out there. Aside from the water, the majority of the other ingredients in this drink consist of various sugars and salts. Gatorade contains no real fruit juice.
I recommend Gatorade to those who are losing a lot of fluids whether through perspiration or illness as long as they have no other health problems that may be worsened by consuming sodium in these amounts. For anyone else, I recommend that Gatorade is consumed in moderation to avoid sodium related problems. If in doubt, check with your doctor to see if Gatorade is right for you.
