Pros: Quick, quiet, spin removes excess moisture. Allows user to make decisions.
About 2 months ago I purchased this washer to replace my 15 year old Amana. It is fortunate the Amana broke when it did, since I was still able to replace it with a washer with similar options. Before long "Big Brother" will eliminate so-called energy wasting options such as water level and temperature selection. This machine still permits me to wash 1 pair of jeans on hot with a full water level if I so choose. Saving water/energy should be my decision, not the machine's.
The following are specific to this model: 2 wash/spin speed combinations, bleach and fabric softener dispensers, 630 rpm spin speed, 3 wash/rinse temperatures (actually all rinses are cold), 3 water levels, stainless steel tub.
I'm happy with the performance of this GE. It is quick, quiet, and does a good job of wringing the water from clothes during the final spin. The tub seems to hold about 50% more than the previous Amana, so full loads can be done less frequently. Using Sears HE powder or Era regular does not seem to affect cleaning ability although the Era does give a nice scent. Initial agitation seems a bit more gentle than my old Amana but then slowly builds in intensity. The spin cycles do a very good job of removing excess water.
This machine has 2 cycles (as stated above): Whites/DarkColors and Casual. Per GE, there is no difference in what the machine does during the Whites or DarkColors cycle. Certainly the dial could be construed as misleading, since it does provide the Whites and DarkColors selections separately thereby implying something different occurs according to the selection.
Per GE, this washer is manufactured at Appliance Park in Louisville, Ky. The warranty is for one year. I purchased the extended warranty for $99 (and I don't care what Consumer Reports says about extended warranties). This covers the machine for 4 years after the manufacturer's warranty expires. Cheap insurance for $25/yr (you know what home visits cost). Washer was on sale at Home Depot, Lowes did price match which reduced price to $322.38. Delivery free. With purchase of new stainless steel hoses ($19.99 less $2.00 military discount) installation was free.
I'm sure more expensive machines do a wonderful job and save tremendous amounts of energy with all their new electronics which will never fail and cost next to nothing to replace if such an event occurs. I prefer a proven design which still allows me to make the decisions.
