Pros: Nothing stands out
Cons: Rock-hard and very slow greens.
The Bottom Line: This would be a very nice course if a few more details were paid more attention to. But as it stands now...I'm not going to rush back to Exeter.

| csilv's Full Review: Exeter Country Club |
I try to get out and play a new course in the area every couple weeks with a buddy. My playing partner suggested Exeter Country Club in Exeter Rhode Island. We played the 18-hole layout a couple days ago, accompanied by a regular who got paired up with us who was able to give us some local knowledge of the course.
I would not drive the 60+ miles to play this course again. First off it cost us $41 to ride for 18 holes on a weekday afternoon, this is a little higher than average for the area. There are no signs at any of the tee-boxes that give you any detailed info about the hole, just a wooden post that gives you a yardage and the hole # (if present, some of the holes have no marking at all) and the scorecards provided little additional help. The fairways are not cut very close, and while they are very even, there is no tremendous advantage to being in the fairway over the first cut of rough. Yardage markers are hard to find and sometimes conflicting with the 150 yard "bush" on every hole. On one hole I was about 2 yards past the bush, and the yardage marked on a sprinkler was 139.
The greens are quite unpleasant. Any approach with a short iron that hits the green generally bounces like you had just hit a trampoline. Don't misunderstand me...the greens are not hard, they are "springy". The course was not dried-out as happens after a week of not getting rain or water. It was pretty amusing watching my titleist bounce 4 feet into the air on the approaches that I hit the green with. Putting the greens was a killer. If you had a put longer that 20 feet, you would be better served using your driver versus a putter. The greens were "SLOW". All three of us had a difficult time rolling the ball, almost always long puts bounced on their way to the hole.
The course is pretty open, and would be good for about all levels of play, but the back nine was definitely the better of the two sides. Generally shorter and more interesting holes were found on the back.
This would be a pretty nice course if a few of the details were paid more attention to. The layout is nice with a good mix of longer and short par 4's and Par 5's. The par 3's are pretty similar. I scored better than average during my round there, but still did not enjoy the round as much as I would normally on a new course.
There is a pro shop on site and a nice little bar and pub in the next building.
Oh well...maybe I'll give Exeter another shot..but I'm in no hurry to do so right now.
