Masturbation, Nudity, Drugs and Video Games - Grandma's Boy

Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:Funny, entertaining movie.

Cons:Crude at times.  Lots of drug use.  Silly humor.

The Bottom Line: Grandma's Boy is an entertaining movie, though it isn't for everyone.

I remember not being interested in seeing Grandma's Boy when it came out to theaters.  It looked like it would just be stupid.  I ended up seeing the movie a few years ago and I liked it overall.  I recently decided to watch it again.

Video game tester Alex has to find a new place to live after he finds out that his roommate didn't pay the rent.  Alex first tries to stay with one of his friends and co-workers, Jeff, but that doesn't work out thanks to his being caught by Jeff's mom masturbating.  Alex then goes to stay with his grandmother, Lilly.  She and her two friends, Bea and Grace, have him do a lot of chores around the house, which tires him out and makes it hard for him to finish his work.  A deadline is approaching for a new game, and Samantha has been brought in to over see the last stage of the project.  Alex and the other testers have to find the problems in the game in time for them to be fixed for the release.  JP, the young prodigy game designer, looks down on the testers, especially Alex.

The plot for Grandma's Boy is very simple and there really aren't any surprises to what happens.  The majority of the movie is focused on Alex trying to adjust to living with his grandmother and her friends while also getting his work done.  He is shown doing various chores around the house a few times.  The fact that he has trouble getting his work done because of the chores and the fact that Lilly and her friends take over the television is an attempt to add some complications.  The movie is entertaining even though the plot is rather weak.

A lot of what happens in Grandma's Boy is somehow connected to Alex's work as a video game tester.  The upcoming game release is a big deal for the company, and the testers are under a lot of pressure to find all the bugs so they can be fixed in time.  I know nothing about how video games are designed and released, but it seems kind of odd that testers would be responsible for fixing the bugs that are found.  I can see them being used to find the bugs, but I would have thought that programmers would have to fix them once found.  In addition to testing games, Alex has also been designing his own game that he has been keeping a secret.  That game ends up playing a part in what happens in the movie later as well.  The video game things are entertaining even though I suspect some of it isn't really accurate.

Alex is frequently smoking pot throughout Grandma's Boy.  He is shown meeting with Dante, his supplier, and the two of them get wasted more than once.  Other characters, including Samantha, also get high as the movie progresses.  All the drug use gets a bit old after the first few times it is shown even though there is humor to some of the scenes.  It is amusing to see Lilly, Bea, and Grace after they make tea out of Alex's stash thinking it is tea.  Anyone who is offended by seeing drug use in a movie should pick something else.  The movie does have a decent amount of humor, though much of it is silly or crude.  This isn't a movie for everyone and some people will more than likely be offended by some of the crude things done for humor.

There are some sexual situations in Grandma's Boy even though there really aren't actual sex scenes.  Early in the movie, Alex attempts to stay with Jeff, one of his coworkers who still lives with his parents.  Alex decides it would be a good idea to masturbate in the bathroom without locking the door and Jeff's mother walks in.  Later in the movie there is a party at Lilly's house.  Barry, another one of Alex's coworkers, spends hours attached to the breast of a very well endowed woman.  She is shown topless and that is really it for nudity even though a few other characters do show some skin.  Jeff hooks up with Grace, and while not much is shown, it is clear that they have sex.  There are other sexual comments made by different characters.  There is a lot of swearing throughout the movie and the word that rhymes with luck is used a lot.  This is not a family friendly movie by any stretch of the imagination.

Alex is a thirty-five year old video game tester who spends a lot of his time high even when he's supposed to be working.  He is fun loving and not serious even though he is good at his job.  He seems like a nice enough guy.  Allen Covert does fine with the part.  Lilly is Alex's grandmother.  She seems very sweet and it is clear that she loves her grandson.  Doris Roberts does fine with the part.  Grace and Bea are Lilly's roommates.  Grace is oversexed and Bea is so medicated that she has no clue what is going on most of the time.  Shirley Jones and Shirley Knight do fine in the parts.

Samantha is the woman brought in to make sure that the video game is ready in time for the release.  Really all that is shared about her is that she is good at video games and she is interested in Alex.  Linda Cardellini does fine with the part.  JP started designing video games when he was very young.  He is working on a new game and having some issues with it.  He tends to act like a jerk and most of the other employees don't like him.  Joel David Moore is fine in the part.

Mr. Cheezle is the boss for the company.  He is into a bunch of new age stuff.  He isn't in many scenes, so Kevin Nealon doesn't have a lot to do.  Jeff still lives with his parents and acts very child like in many ways.  Nick Swardson does well with the part, making him a funny character.  Barry and Kane are two other testers that work with Alex and Jeff.  Jonah Hill and Kelvin Yu don't have that much to do.  Dante is Alex's dealer.  Dante is stoned every time he is shown and he generally doesn't make sense.  Peter Dante is fine in the part.

DVD Information

There are a couple of different DVD versions for Grandma's Boy.  I recently watched the unrated version.  I honestly have no idea what is different from the rated version that I saw on HBO.  The unrated version has commentaries, deleted scenes, music videos, and a few short, mildly entertaining featurettes.  I have no idea what sort of extras are on the rated DVD version of the movie.

Grandma's Boy is crude and silly, but it is funny and entertaining overall.  Certain things about the movie will offend some viewers, so this isn't a movie for everyone.
