Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:Innovative idea, brilliant cast, and funny, funny movie.

Cons:I can't really complain about this one.

The Bottom Line: A unique story, and a rare great movie.  Funny, touching, and Iconic.  Every Sci Fi series now has a Groundhog Day episode.

Groundhog Day (1993) Directed by Harold Ramis

"Well, what if there is no tomorrow? There wasn't one today."  Phil Connors

Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is a weatherman in Philadelphia.  He is miserable, smarmy, self satisfied and selfish.  (Bill Murray frequently plays this part...)  His current mission is a fluff piece on the Groundhog Day celebration in Punxsutawney, PA.  Accompanying him are Rita (Andie McDowell) his producer, and Larry (Chris Elliott) his camera guy.  Phil is cynical and contemptuous of the celebration; Rita is caught up in the fun of it.

They stay the night, (First of February) and at 6:00 a.m. Phil is awakened to the sounds of Sonny and Cher's "I got you babe."  He gets up, grouses through his morning and gives a lackluster performance designed to demonstrate his contempt for the "unimportant" assignment he has to do.  As they are preparing to leave; a storm blocks travel, trapping them in Punxsutawney.  Phil spends the day being smarmy and alienating the locals, looking down on them as hicks and rubes.

Then, at 6:00 a.m. he is awakened to the sounds of Sonny and Cher's "I got you babe."  Phil quickly figures out that everyone else in the world is of the opinion that it is Groundhog Day.  Phil is confused, which just makes him more obnoxious.

By the third day Phil is sure he is in some sort of weird time loop.  Every morning when he wakes up, it is the Second of February in Punxsutawney, Sonny and Cher are on the Radio, and every other single aspect of the day unfurls unchanged, unless he changes it.
And he tries.  He stays in.  He gets all the answers on Jeopardy.  He leaves town.  Nothing changes.  No matter the time, he wakes up at 6:00 a.m. to "I got you babe."

He explores the possibilities; he seduces women.  He robs an armoured car.  He does whatever he wants, because there is no consequence beyond 6:00 a.m.

But there is also no hope.  Finally, he decides the only escape is suicide.

And wakes up at 6:00 a.m.  "I got you babe." Indeed.

He tries killing the groundhog.  Nothing ever changes.  Then he decides he is supposed to try to seduce Rita.  It is easier than you think when you can learn from your mistakes and wipe the slate clean.  However, some things can't be done in a single day.  He gets close, but she is not the kind of girl to take a tumble on the strength of a single day.

The situation drives him mad; always the same elements, stepping off a curb into a wet hole, Ned Ryerson, insurance agent from hell, the ceremony, the dropping tray at the diner, and no one ever believes him.

One element that has been a constant is a bum, asking for a hand out..  Phil finds him dead late one night.  And a change begins to happen.  He gives the bum money.  And he looks at the world in a new way.  He has nothing but time.  What could you do with endless time?

He reads.  He learns French; he takes piano lessons; always the first lesson from the teacher's point of view, but getting better and better.

He learns what makes the people of Punxsutawney tick.  He learns where they are in their lives when tragedy strikes.  He develops a pattern.

He gives a brilliant moving report on Groundhog Day, then hurries to make an appointment to catch a kid as he falls out of a tree.  He changes the elderly ladies flat right where they stop.   He gives the mayor the Heimlich maneuver saving his life.  He goes through every day making it better for as many people as he can.
And Rita notices.  As soon as he stopped trying to attract her, she noticed.

It is a moving film, funny, witty, with a message.  How long was he trapped?  Ten years or ten thousand?  Either way, stepping outside his selfishness set him free.

Punxsutawney Phil is neither Lean Nor Mean.  However, this review is 666 words exactly.  However the groundhog did bite Bill Murray.  Twice.
