Pros: Girls love it!
Cons: Supplies used too quickly
Baby dolls are often the toy of choice for young girls. There are dozens of well- known baby doll manufacturers to fulfill this need and most of them are either dolls for cuddling and nothing else or dolls that also take a bottle. But there is one doll that is legendary for her ability to eat. The baby doll is Baby Alive and one variation on this doll is My Baby Alive Blonde.
Doll Facts and Figures:
My Baby Alive Blonde is a standard- size baby doll that is capable of eating food as well as drinking from a bottle. The food cannot be any food- it has to be food made using the special Baby Alive formula packets. These are mixed with water to create a food similar to baby food served from a jar. As My Baby Alive Blonde is fed and served her drink, she will eventually relieve herself into her diaper.
My Baby Alive Blonde is a talking doll that says about thirty different phrases. She will tell you that she is hungry, thank you for her food, and make other short statements. Lie her down and her eyes close to take a nap. Pick her back up and her eyes open.
My Baby Alive Blonde comes with a dress, bib, bowl, bottle, spoon, two diapers, and two packets of dry food mix. She operates on two AA batteries, which are also included in the package set.
Baby Alive has been around for more than three decades and while the concept is still about the same as it was in the early days, the doll has evolved and branched out. Today, Baby Alive still eats food- a quality that made her unique among dolls when first released- and she still drinks from her bottle, but the manufacturer has expanded the product line to include more Baby Alive dolls than ever before.
My girls are very girly and that means, of course, that they love dolls. They like to dress them, cuddle them feed them, and change them. With desires such as these, it made perfect sense that they would want the My Baby Alive Blonde doll. They saw ads for it on television and immediately proclaimed (much like they do with everything else they see in television ads) their wish to someday own this doll. I was in luck one day when I found it for sale and, knowing it would be a huge hit, made the purchase.
As expected, my girls took to their new doll right away and the first thing that wanted to do was mix the food and feed it to the baby. The doll comes with two packets of food so we were able to mix and prepare it quickly. A little bit of water and some quick stirring is all it takes. The food is then spoon fed into Baby Alive’s mouth where she does her best to consume it. Her mouth makes some movement, but not much and the only reason she is able to “eat” is because the food itself is so runny. That, and the fact that kids will immediately give the baby water from a bottle, ensures that the food gets thinned out as it enters the dolls insides. And what happens to it then? Yep, it comes out the other end and lands in the diaper, which then must be changed.
My Baby Alive Blonde is different from most other dolls in the fact that the doll eats food and talks. She has about 30 different phrases (not a bad vocabulary or speaking ability for an infant, no?) that she speaks and she keeps kids entertained with her talking and more true- to- life ability to eat and drink. My girls absolutely love their My Baby Alive Blonde and would give it five stars if they could.
But mom and dad have other opinions and we must reduce our rating as a result. The number one complaint we have is the obvious: The food and diapers get used up much too quickly. As stated above, the doll comes with two packets of food and two diapers. How long do you suppose this lasted? You guessed it- not even one day. Once the diapers are full of liquid, they cannot be used again and must be discarded. And two packets of food means two servings, which isn’t likely last more than one time. So, to keep the little ones happy, you have two choices: Either go online and buy a refill pack for about $25, or create your own cloth diaper and convince your kid to use only water and skip the food. If your kids go through the supplies like mine do, you will be buying a refill package weekly. What was a $30 doll can end up costing you several hundred dollars per year.
Another issue I have is with the batteries. The doll operates on two AA batteries and it was nice that the manufacturer included the first two with the doll. But depending on usage, they won’t last very long. Ours have already been replaced once and will have to replaced monthly at the current level of usage.
The extra costs would be enough to convince many to not purchase this doll, but there is, of course, the undeniable fact that little girls LOVE Baby Alive! I cannot think of any other doll that has captured my girls’ attention like this one has. It even encourages imaginative play as they try their best to act like a mommy and take care of their little baby. Sure, I get tired of them coming to me and asking me to logon to Amazon.com to buy another supply refill pack, but their enthusiasm for this toy is difficult to overlook.
Overall, My Baby Alive Blonde is a great toy from a child’s perspective and it does encourage creative play, so it isn’t all bad. It’s a shame the accessories get used up so quickly and an even bigger shame that the refill prices are so high. If you can find a small piece of cloth to use as a diaper and get the kiddos to use only water, this toy is worth owning, otherwise, it can cost you multiple times its original price over time. Add everything together and you get a toy that rates average overall.
