User Rating: Excellent
Ease of Use:
Pros:Sleek design, HP-E-print, all in one software, user friendly, All in one unit.
Cons:Slow startup, A lot of movement when printing.
The Bottom Line: This is a good all round multi-functional unit that i would not hesitate to recomend.
The Officejet 6500A is a multifunctional printer which effectively means that it has print, copy, scan and fax capabilities. I have installed many of these for clients and i own the 6500A plus which differs from the 6500A only in the fact that it has wireless capability where the 6500A doesn't.

The printer gives a good first impression when you take it out of the box with it's sleek black design, it is also not overly large and would fit comfortably on most medium sized office desk's (plz choose a sturdy desk as the inkjet head that moves up and down when printing causes the printer to move quite a bit, for this reason it would not be a good idea to put it on a flimsy TV tray for example). The printer's setup does take quite a bit of time as it aligns the cartridges when you power it on. It does display a guide on how to remove the packaging materials and insert the cartridges on the built in LCD screen, which is helpful.
The cartridges are 4 separate units, 1 black and 3 for magenta, cyan and yellow, these are available at comparatively less than what cartridges for a 2 cartridge printer is available. Another point to note is that the cartridges included with the printer are start-up cartridges which are only 20% full so be sure to purchase extra cartridges when you buy the printer. After going through the initial setup you are instructed to start the software installation whilst the alignment takes place. The software installation is quite straight forward and you can choose between direct connection via usb cable or network installation via Ethernet cable. Usb is usually sufficient if you are using a desktop computer that stay's in one place but if you are a laptop user who wants to be able to print from your bed for example i have a little secret to divulge. If you have a wireless adsl/Internet router you can effectively connect you 6500A to it via Ethernet cable and use the software to set it up as wireless printer and in so doing save yourself from having to pay extra for the 6500A Plus which has wireless capability's. One can easily enough find article's on how to do this just by searching Google concerning the subject.
Once the software has been installed it functions seamlessly and prints in relatively high quality. My wife used it to print out a number of our wedding photo's which she used to create a collage which is currently framed and hanging on our living room wall. The difference in quality between these prints and professionally printed photo's can only be noticed if you really scrutinize it up close and although the high quality printing does take longer than what a laserjet printer would take it is not excessively so. One other observation concerning the software is that it includes all the functions of the printer in one easy package whereas many other printer manufacturers like Samsung uses separate software applications for printing, scanning and faxing. These separate applications can cause frustration when setting up and configuring those printers. With the 6500A however this is not the case, everything you might need including software that handles scanning and faxing you will find in the Hp solution centre icon that appears on your desktop after you have it installed.
It also allows you to configure how the unit functions to your heart's content. One can for example configure print Quality to be able to either print high quality prints or standard quality that prints faster. The scanning quality can also be changed to insure highly detailed scans or normal quality that can easily be attached to emails. The high quality scans are surprisingly detailed, picking up even the smallest detail which you can even crop and enlarge in image editing software later on. You can also choose to either save scans to your computer or to have them attached directly to an email if you have an e-mail program like outlook installed. That leaves you to only fill in the e-mail address and message and click send. One can scan either via the document feeder on top of the printer which supports multiple page scans or via the flat bed scanner directly underneath the feeder. One useful tip i discovered is to only use the feeder for normal computer paper scans as photo's or exam pad type paper tends to get stuck in it. For such type's of scans rather use the flat bed scanner.
I also like the fact that when the software installs it also installs the printer as a fax which means that you can send faxes directly out of word by printing to the available 6500A Fax in your printers section. As if all these features are not enough the 6500A also comes with HP E-print which allows you to setup an e-mail address for you printer at Hp. This effectively means that whatever you e-mail to the printer e-mail address will be printed, so you could for example email a photo that you have taken from you android phone and it will print on your 6500 as long as it is connected to a network that has internet access. The 6500A Plus which is the one i own is also airprint capable which means you can print to it directly if you have an apple device with minimal setup. If your printer is wirelessly connected it is literally a case of clicking the print option on your I-pad and selecting the printer. The e-print capability really sets Hp apart from any other make and makes it the printer to choose for the person who loves his mobile devices.
The only downside that i have experienced with this printer is the fact that the ink cartridges tend to dry up if you don't use it regularly. When i say regularly I mean at least once a month which makes it a moot point for most people as they print more regularly. The wireless setup can be a bit technical and one might consider procuring the services of an onsite computer technician to come and set it up if you are not technically savvy. Other than these points I find no fault with it and I think it would suite the home or small office user brilliantly and would happily recommend it to anyone who would want to purchase it.
