My fiancee and I bought the Bosch 53 series dishwasher to replace an old Maytag model that died. We did a moderate amount of research on the purchase. But we're very glad we ultimately went with Bosch. Here were our pros and cons:
Pros:
-- Quiet...very, very quiet. We're thinking about doing a remodel in a year or two to turn our kitchen into a kitchen/family room area. Because we'll be spending a lot of time in the kitchen, we wanted to make sure the dishwasher would be quiet. The Bosch is so quiet, you hardly know it's going.
-- Rack size. The Bosch doesn't have the mechanism that grinds up the crud that comes off plates. Instead it has a filter that needs to be cleaned periodically. One of the side benefits of this is that the Bosch doesn't require the motor assembly at the bottom of the dishwasher, which saves 9-12 inches, I'd guess. Because of the space savings, the amount of clearance between the top and bottom racks is bigger than usual. With the old Maytag, we'd occasionally have an item that was too tall to fit. Now, that almost never happens.
-- Cleaning. We've had no problems at all. The dishes come out clean, unspotted and generally dry (although every once in a while they are a little moist when they come out). We've used the scrub cycle on some tougher jobs, and it seems to work well.
-- Water/Detergent use. This wasn't our top criteria, but it's nice to feel that you're saving the fish by using less water and dumping fewer detergents into the sewer system.
-- Looks. Yeah, yeah, of course you shouldn't care too much about looks. But face it, we all do. Totally subjective, but the stainless steel front and the flush buttons gives it a cool look.
Cons:
-- Filter: We thought this would be a bigger deal than it has turned out to be. I kept asking the sales guys how often you needed to change this thing. I couldn't get a good answer. They kept saying that it depends on how clean your dishes are when they go in. We've had the dishwasher for two months or so. I think we've only rinsed the filter once. It takes literally about 20 seconds to do. Admittedly, we usually rinse the plates before putting them in. But we don't do any big scrubbing. The filter really hasn't been an issue.
It's still early to pass final judgement. But right now, I'd say I'm a loyal Bosch user.
