| JennieLynn's Full Review: Fisher and Paykel DD-602 24 in. Built-in Dishwashe... |
As household member in charge of dishes, my husband bought a Fisher-Paykel dishdrawer just before our first child arrived. Our previous, 10-year-old dishwasher was fairly noisy and had begun to leak. My husband liked F-P's quiet performance, two-drawer system, and great looks.
A short while later, our baby arrived and suddenly dishes became my job. While I still liked the quietness and looks, I became dramatically aware of three shortcomings of the system.
First, it doesn't DRY the dishes! China turns out OK, but plastic remains sopping wet as does non-stick cookware. So all my baby's bottles, nipples, etc., remain warm and wet for hours. This is a real nuisance as it encourages fungal and bacterial growth. When a repairman came out for another problem (one of the rubber bumper/seals came loose), he told me it was just how it was -- and jacked up the Jet-Dry additive a notch. Any more, he warned me, would leave a taste on my dishes. AURGH. I don't like the stuff much already (how many chemicals is my baby getting now?) and now I have to have more of it????
Second, its quietness is due to lack of a grinder (the same with most "ultra-quiet" systems), which means that food bits remain at the bottom of the unit until cleaned out manually by ... me. So now I'm having to wash the dishes thoroughly before washing them ... especially in light of problem #1. More work just when I need less.
Third, the "lock" on the system merely prevents it being turned on. The lower dishdrawer is VERY easy for my now-toddler to open and root around in. It's only about 16" off the floor. Another "NO" that I don't need.
All in all I would NOT buy this product again with a small child in the house. The convenience (and it IS convenient) of washing a number of smaller loads is more than outweighed by the hassles of wet dishes and extensive pre-wash.
