GE DVL223EBWW Standard Electric Dryer
In November of 2001, I made some really big changes in my life. It began with a move to Tulsa, OK so that I could be closer to my daughter and my brother and their families. I always hated moving and this was no exception, in fact it was worse. But, with the help of some of my family and friends I finally made the move. I moved into a one-bedroom apartment from a house of 2200 square foot. Thats a lot of junk to find a try to cram into such a tiny apartment. Im still sorting and determining just what I can do without and as time goes by, Im finding it easier all the time to let go of things I thought I had to have.
When I moved into this apartment, it was washer and dryer ready. That meant I had to purchase them. My husband had always made the buying decisions in the house, so this was a bit of an adventure for me. I looked around to try to find something with basic controls. I had never found a multitude of choices, cycles, and all the bells and whistles to be necessary. I wanted a rather basic unit with the ability to dry my clothes with as few choices and cycles as was feasible. I also wanted the best price. After looking around for quite awhile, I found what I needed at Wal-Mart with the GE DVL223EBWW Standard Electric Dryer for $279. So, I paid for the Dryer (and my new washing machine) and had them delivered to the apartment in June of 2002.
I paid for installation and it really did not take the service men very long to install either machine. The wiring was already in place and all they had to do, basically, was to plug it in after hooking up the vent to the exhaust vent, which was already in place. The only problem was (and this was no reflection on the service installation) that the apartment complex had the apartments resided at some point and they (duh!) put the siding over the dryer vents on the outside. We pulled the hose to the inside of the apartment and covered it with an old pair of panty hose. This has worked fine, although it is good for winter and not quite as nice in the summer. Fortunately, washing only for me, theres not a lot of washing and drying for one.
Cautions
As with all appliances, there are the requisite cautions, which always seem so obvious, but I do understand why they are published.
* Never reach into a dryer while the drum is turning.
* Clean the lint filter before each load to prevent accumulation of lint and dont operate the dryer without the filter.
* Do not wash or dry articles that have come in contact with combustible or explosive substances, which could ignite or explode.
* Do not store any articles that have the above on them anywhere near the dryer.
* Do not dry articles containing rubber, plastic, or similar materials such as padded bras, tennis shoes, galoshes, bath mats, rugs, bibs, baby pants
you get the idea.
* Do not dry fiberglass articles in your dryer. (?)
* Do not spray any type of aerosol into, on or near dryer at any time.
(These cautions have been paraphrased and a few omitted from the Operating Manual).
Control Panel
There are two knobs on the front of the dryer. The one on the left is simply the Start button. Once you have set the cycle you want to use on the knob to the right, you simply turn the left knob slightly clockwise until the dryer starts and then the knob returns to the starting position for the next time.
The right knob is needs a little more thought. The knob/dial allows you to choose from basically two drying cycles. It is marked at the top left with Automatic Cottons which is referring to the entire left side of the dial. The right upper label is Timed Dry which refers to the entire right of the dial. The left side allows you to select Less Dry, More Dry and Optimum Dry.
Let me see if I can make that clearer without a picture. On the left side of the dial, there is:
From bottom to top: (6:00 to 12:00 on the dial)
Less Dry
More Dry
Optimum Dry
The dryer uses thermostats to monitor air temperature and reduce fabric wear.
On the right side of the right dial (12:00 to 6:00 on the dial) is a timer with settings from 20 minutes to 80 minutes. So far, I have primarily used the left side with the More Dry setting and this has worked out well for me.

Maintaining
Maintaining this machine couldnt be simpler. To clean the outside, simply wipe or dust any spills or products you may use during laundry. It cleans easily. The lint filter is located on the front of the dryer and is seen when the door is opened at the bottom of the opening. It is quite easy to pull out and remove the lint. Aside from that, you only need to keep an eye on your exhaust duct to be sure it doesnt get clogged with lint. Its a breeze.
Warranty
From the Manual:
For the period of: one year from the date of the original purchase, GE will replace: Any part of the dryer which fails due to a defect in materials or workmanship. During this full one-year warranty, GE will also provide, free of charge, all labor and in-home service to replace the defective part.
My Experience
From day one, I have been more than pleased with this dryer. It does everything it says it will and that it has cycles for. The tub is large enough for quite a few clothes, although, I find that there are fewer wrinkles with smaller loads. I have dried everything from socks to quilts with no problems at all. One thing I was pleased to see is that you can use dryer sheets in the dryer although the instructions do say not to put them into an already warmed dryer. I had pretty much got out of the habit of using the fabric softener sheets. The dryer is extremely quiet to run, which it says it will be. The only thing I wish it had was an alarm to let you know when the dryer stops. Im terrible about getting engrossed in something like writing and not notice that it has stopped. It is less obvious because it is so quiet. I have been using the dryer now for 2 years and it is still like new. I love it and would recommend it highly to anyone who is looking for a fairly simple and reasonably priced clothes dryer.
