It's the dog days of summer and I can't take one more summer of sleeping on the couch because the portable air conditioner I have in my room is horribly underpowered. After my grandmother got a new air conditioner in her house she no longer needed the portable one she used in her bedroom so she gave it to me. The portable unit enlisted only 3,400 btu of cooling power which was just not enough to cool my 11' by 13' room. Hence, I went to Sears and bought this Kenmore.
Performance:
At 5,600 btu this air conditioner has no trouble keeping my room nice and comfortable, and would have no trouble converting my room to Alaska either. One problem with many small room air conditioners is their lack of energy efficiency. This air conditioner, however, is tops at saving money. The energy guide that came with the unit listed air conditioners for a range of 8.0 EER to 10.0 EER. The Kenmore was off the scale with a rating of 11.0 EER.
Controls:
The air conditioner has controls on the unit and a remote. There are 3 fan speeds for both cooling and fan modes. The digital temperature display allows settings from 60 degrees to 90 degrees. The digital display is far better than conventional dials that use vague numbers instead of temperatures. In cool mode the fan has a "one touch" button which varies fan speed automatically based on how hot the room is. There is also a 24 hour on/off timer, and a power saver setting. The remote has all the buttons that the unit has, however, they are not arranged in any logical order. The buttons just seem to be placed wherever they would fit, and not placed by similar function as they are on the unit. The front of the unit's intake grill swings down to give access to the easily cleaned air filter. The louvers adjust left to right and up and down, hover they are prone to rattle when the compressor is on.
Installation:
Very easy. Place in window, extend sides and screw in place.
Overall:
This air conditioner is a very good buy. It's reasonably priced, has great performance, efficiency, and more features than most.
