| lyomtoob's Full Review: Whirlpool GU1500XT - Multiple Color 24 in. Built-i... |
We bought this dishwasher 2 years ago when our old one failed. We did our homework, using Consumer Reports, and selected this dishwasher because it was highly rated and delivered a nice package of features for the price.
I have to say, this is the worst dishwasher we've ever owned! as well as the most expensive. We have been frustrated from Day One! and yesterday, the top rack broke (see RACKS below).
CLEANING:
We learned early on that, in order to get clean dishes and etch-free glasses, we must run the hot water to the kitchen faucet before starting the dishwasher. No matter what cycle is selected, the dishes are never dry when the cycle ends. When I called, Whirlpool reps told us that all modern dishwashers have this problem, due to government restrictions on the amount of energy a dishwasher appliance can use. (Is this true? My old dishwasher dried the dishes.) They suggested we try Rinse Aid to improve the dishwasher's drying ability. We did try the Rinse Aid, but didn't see a noticeable improvement. Besides, why should I have to buy Rinse Aid to get one of the advertised features of this dishwasher to work?
LOADING:
This dishwasher is difficult to load. In spite of reading the loading instructions, it took me a week to find a place to load my soup/pasta bowls where they would actually stand up. Plates routinely topple over like a row of dominoes, with very little encouragement, so I have to be careful to make sure that nothing touches the row of plates when I am loading (which means it's difficult to fit any of the larger serving pieces/pans in with a row of plates).
RACKS and BASKETS:
The SILVERWARE BASKET's hinged side flops open when unloading, spilling silverware all over the kitchen floor or onto the open door of the dishwasher. Sometimes the basket just falls off for no reason because the latch doesn't close securely. Since Day One, operating the BOTTOM RACK has been a rough ride because the rack seems too wide for the body of the dishwasher and doesn't roll smoothly, contributing to the topple-over plate effect. Pull too hard to get the thing going, and the whole thing flies right out of the dishwasher and off the open door (fortunately, that only happened once). The TOP RACK has "sagged" since the day it was installed. When pulled out, even with nothing in it, it hangs down at about a 30 degree angle. Fully loaded it looks like an accident waiting to happen, and yesterday, the side bracket that secures the top rack to the rail broke, so as of right now, we can only wash dishes on the bottom rack!
We plan to repair the dishwasher because we can't justify flushing our $700+ investment down the garbage disposal. But as a result of our experience, we canceled our subscription to Consumer Reports.
The only good thing I can say about this dishwasher is that it's quiet. My recommendation: Don't buy it!
