Pros: When it worked it met my expectations. GE warranty actually exceeded my expectations.
Cons: Not very reliable, I'd search for something better if I wasn't getting an inexpensive replacement.
The Bottom Line: Think twice before you buy one new, consider extended warranty. GE is doing OK by me, considering product age.

| jrbskis's Full Review: General Electric JVM1640 1000 Watts Microwave Oven |
My condo came with a JVM1640. Last year, when the microwave was a few years old, it started making bad noises and recently quit heating. It's a common story, several people in the neighboring units have had the same thing happen.
Pretty much everyone agrees that the magnetron is likely the weak point in this design. After doing a bit of searching I discovered that the part to repair it is available so I figured that maybe I'll get it fixed. Local (non-GE) service people were willing but didn't know the whole story. Some more searching lead to the discovery that the magnetron in my unit, made in March of 2000, was covered by a 9 year warranty. Through GE the part is covered under warranty but the labor to replace it isn't. I decided to risk the price of a GE service call and diagnosis (about $70). If the magnetron was the problem - it probably would have been under $100 total to fix the thing. Turns out the wave-guide was scorched and they offered to replace the microwave with a new one for $100 (inclusive of the service call).
The microwave worked fine most of the time for 5 yrs, GE will be installing a new one for $100. I had to deal with some aggravation with customer service on the 800 numbers when the new one didn't get shipped right away. At least I'm not spending $250 for a new one.
