Pros: 1-touch cooking option. Easy to clean. Cooking times. 2-speed fan. 2 light settings.
Cons: Resets to blinking 12:00 often. Defrosting. Plate always rotates.
One of the few ''new'' items in the home I bought last year is a GE Spacemaker Microwave Model# JVM1650. I'm not sure exactly when the previous owner installed it but it was around 2002, so it has been in use for about 8 years. Imagine my surprise when I saw how poorly this model has been rated by others, since I have had good luck with it (so far).
The GE Spacemaker Microwave in my home is white and has a nice, modern look. It's an over-the-stove model that was mounted around the cabinetry. There is a 2-speed vent that leads outside (you can also re-circulate the air on this model) and it has two light settings that shine down onto the cooktop. It also has a removable rack inside which I never use.
This 1,000-watt microwave oven has a rotating dish inside (which cannot be deactivated) that measures about 13 inches across. The plate can easily be removed for cleaning. The flat keypad is touch sensitive (aren't they all anymore?) and has numerous options, such as Defrost, Cook, Potato, Popcorn, Vegetables. I rarely use the special keys since I prefer to just type-in the time to cook and then hit Start.
Some other features on the keypad are an ability to add 30 seconds to the cooking time, Power Levels from 1 – 10, an 'Express Cook' 1-touch feature where you just hit 1 for a minute (and so forth) and an ability to change the volume of the beeper. There is also a 24-hour clock with a day and date, which often needs to be reset for some reason.
Based on my experience the GE Spacemaker Microwave Model# JVM1650 works well for most of my needs. It cooks quickly and there have been no malfunctions. Cooking times are reasonable for a microwave. My one complaint is that the Defrost feature seems substandard – it takes forever to defrost something even a little bit.
Overall I am satisfied with the performance of the GE Spacemaker microwave and am surprised that so many others have rated it poorly. Perhaps this was one of the earlier models that was made better? Besides minor complaints about the Defrost feature, an inability to turn off the rotating plate feature, and a clock that often resets to a flashing ''12:00" I have not found anything to complain about.
