dusksunset's Full Review: Sharp R-230 800 Watts Microwave Oven
This Sharp Microwave Oven is the second microwave I have owned. I don't remember what brand the first one was, but the Sharp has lasted much longer. Once you're in the habit of using the microwave, you can't live without one, so when the original one stopped working, it needed immediate replacement.
While I was looking for a basic microwave, this Sharp Microwave has all kinds of extra features. There are several one touch buttons for various kinds of foods, most of which I have never used. I do like the defrost feature. When you tell the microwave what kind of meat it is and how much it weighs, it automatically programs the proper defrost cycle, with appropriate times and power levels, beeping to tell you when to turn the meat over or take other action.
The buttons are large, making it easy to press the right ones for what you want the microwave to do. In fact, I often operate it without turning the light on in the room, as I have become accustomed to where the controls are located.
Rotates food for you
Because of the constantly rotating carousel, there is no need to move the food around periodically as it cooks. Food cooks evenly. As long as I have set the proper time and power levels, it comes out great. The trick with microwaves is to cook things a bit less than you think they need. You can always put a cool dish back in for a few more seconds, but there's no way to unburn an overcooked meal.
Like most people, I often use my Sharp Microwave to make baked potatoes quickly. It's also great for reheating leftovers, making burritos from scratch, and cooking frozen and fresh vegetables to that great crisp tender state.
Brownouts reset clock to zero
One thing I don't like about the Sharp Microwave is that it is overly sensitive to power outages. Brownouts are common where I live. Even a brief one will reset the microwave's clock to zero (and that's with it on its own circuit and plugged into a surge protector). However, resetting the clock is easy, so this is just an annoyance.
My only other gripe is that it is not easy to clean. I have tried many methods, including boiling water inside it to loosen up the food debris, but none have been particularly successful.
Overall, I would recommend the Sharp Microwave as an inexpensive way to get the benefits of microwave cooking.
