I bought a Rainbow vacuum cleaner 12 years ago for the outrageous price of $1200.00 dollars. I was a relatively new home owner and wanted to keep my carpet ad floors looking new and feeling clean, so I buckled down and convinced my husband that a Rainbow was the answer to our vacuuming needs.
I used that Rainbow every day for 2 years, and I had very clean floors and we had no allergy problems. Then I got pregnant and hauling the Rainbow up and down the stairs was a struggle. Then I had a baby a few years later and hauling baby/toddler up stair with said Rainbow was even more of a struggle.
Now my Rainbow is sitting in the closet. It hasn't been used in 3 years and I have been using a Hoover Wind Tunnel instead. The Wind Tunnel is lightweight and easier to use.
The Rainbow vacuum cleaner company has a great concept. No bags for the vacuum cleaner. Instead you fill a well with water. The dirt is then sucked in through the cleaner and deposited in the water. This eliminates dust being thrown back into the house and also makes it easier to empty than vacuum cleaner bags.. It is amazing the amount of dirt and filth that can be drawn out of seemingly clean carpets. The demonstration that the salesperson gives will blow you away! You thought your carpets were clean until he reveals the amount of dirt in the well of water. It can be embarrassing. But I think other vacuum cleaners do just as good of a job, you just don't see the dirt in the bag.
The Rainbow is made up of the motor unit, the water well, a rolling canister to place the unit on, a very long hose a power head and several attachments. Putting the unit together to use is simple. You fill the water well, attach the motor unit, place both on canisters and attach the hose and power head. The power head works wonderfully and glides smoothly over the carpet or flooring. It is self adjusting so there is no cranking a dial to have it set on carpet and hardwood or tile flooring.
There area few downfalls to the Rainbow. As mentioned before it is heavy and bulky to carry up and down stairs. I usually had to make 2 trips to get it all up my 2 flights of stairs in my home. The power head doesn't have a light on it so when vacuuming under beds and such it is hard to see where you are moving the power head.
The filter needs to be cleaned off with a toothbrush type gadget every so often. This can be messy as the dirt and grime tend to spray and get blown around. You cannot overfill the water well or the water can damage the motor.
Last but not least the Rainbow company is really hard to get in touch with if there is a problem. My local distributor was impossible to contact and the main company seems to hide it's phone number from customers. I think you would be better served buying a cheaper vacuum cleaner like a Hoover or Eureka. Even tough it may need replacing in 4-5 years at least you will still be ahead in the money game.
