We still have an ongoing problem with the stove. The front panel still heats up despite the fixes below. As a result, I am dropping my rating to two stars."
We had a problem with the front panel of the oven where the knobs were getting very hot to the touch. We called the place where we bought the oven and they sent a tech over. Apparently, there is a problem with the light switch that prevents the door from shutting all the way. The tech had to order and install a new part. This was paid for by either the retailer or the manufacturer and it solved the problem. We purchased the oven from Yale Electric in Dorchester, MA. I am glad we did because the service was excellent.
We recently remodeled our kitchen and replaced an old electric cooktop and teeny oven with this fancy Amana gas model.
WHAT IS A "SLIDE-IN"?
This stove is a little unique because it is a slide-in. This means that the oven is not built into the cabinets. However, it has a small, 1-2 inch metal lip that runs around the top of the unit. This lip is supposed to cover the edge of the countertop up against the stove. In this way, you can clean the stove by wiping across the cooktop all the way to the counter. It also contains spills better. If you don't have the lip, food and spills can fall down in the crack between the oven and cabinets.
Another feature of slide-in ovens is that they don't have a raised back panel for the controls. The cooktop will be flat and flush with the counters giving it a more built-in look. The downside of this is that the controls will then be on the front of the unit - not always the best option for families with smaller children.
The easy cleaning nature of the slide-in sounded good to us - so we decided to get this unit. The only problem is that the unit is rather large and juts out past our cabinets by about 3-4 inches. As a result, we lost that built-in look we were seeking.
STYLE AND SIZE CONSIDERATIONS
We bought a stainless steel front unit for the style. This drives up the price considerably. If you get a black or white door, the cost will be less. The other thing to know is that the sides of the stainless steel unit are black, not stainless. Therefore, if it doesn't fit flush with your cabinets, you will see the black side panels. Our cabinets are a standard '24 inch depth and this oven sticks out about 3 inches.
Here is the list from the manufacturer:
Delay bake and delay self-clean
High performance sealed burners
Touchmatic electronic range control
One-piece cast-iron burner grates and center trivet grate
Exclusive Insta-Broil broiling system
Extra-large viewing window
Removable full-width storage drawer
I like the fact that the oven is self-cleaning and the window to view the oven is "extra large" as described by the manufacturer. However, most or all ovens in this price range have this feature.
The feature that really sold me on the oven was the removable grates and removable pans around the burners. This makes the top of the oven substantially easier to clean since I can put the pans directly in the sink or the dishwasher. The other feature I love is the center grate. There are three grates in all. Two of the grates cover the burners. Then there is one in the center. You can move a hot pot to the center to let it cool down or prevent it from boiling over. This thoughtful feature makes it easier to cook and we use it quite a bit.
There is a drawer at the bottom of the unit that is useful for storing pans or small, flat pots. It is the width of the oven but is not very deep. I like that you can remove the drawer entirely to wash it. However, the size of the drawer does not provide a lot of storage. Additionally, the drawer is made of metal and feels a little flimsy although we have never had a problem with it. In this price range, I would expect the manufacturer to use thicker metal to make the drawer.

It's true - the knobs are plastic. In this price range, you might expect something a little nicer looking. Our oven also has a handy clock between the knobs.

I think the manufacturer listed the depth wrong - our counters are 24 inches deep and this unit juts out about 3 inches beyond them. Another important measurement is the height. You want to make sure the lip around the unit fits snugly over the tops of your counters. If your counters are too high, this unit won't fit in the space.

When we bought this unit, it came with a $100 rebate if we bought two Amana appliances. You can check the web site (www.amana.com) for current rebate offers.
I really like this oven. It works just great and is easier to clean than other units we saw. The only complication is getting that built-in look requires some advance planning. I think it might be hard to get this oven to fit in an already existing kitchen - it probably has to be installed as part of a remodel unless you are lucky to have the exact dimensions already in place.
We got a stainless steel model at Yale Electric in Dorcheser for $1,225 plus tax (free delivery).
If you are remodeling, this is a great oven to consider. There are lots of nice features and it has a built-in look without the built-in cost.
