| speech529's Full Review: Jenn-Air JES8850AA Electric Range |
ANOTHER UPDATE ON OUR LEMON OF A JENN AIR RANGE: The oven control panel has gone out again on 11/29/08 and the oven is not usable at all. This is the second time in 9 months!!! We had it repaired in February 2008. I was told by service department at the Maytag Store that this is due to power surges. We did have an outage two days before. I have read online that the heat of the oven is hard on the computer in the panel. Not sure what causes the problem, but it is commonly experienced. I read a number of similar complaints on http://www.consumeraffairs.com under the Jenn Air section of Appliances link.
READ UPDATE ON REVIEW POSTED 9/11/07 BELOW!!!!!!!! We updated our kitchen last year and decided to go for a sleek look with black granite and a slide-in range. Jenn-Air was a top choice since we had a gas Jenn-Air in our previous home and we loved it. This time we were limited to electric, so we opted for a smooth top range in elegant black.
This range is absolutely beautiful in black. It has tons of options and controls heat almost as well as gas. It has an extra burner in the center for melting butter or chocolate or keeping delicate sauces warm. The front right burner goes from extra large to medium to small. The front right burner is dually adjustable, also. Two back burners are standard. The cooktop is large enough to accommodate large pots and/or numerous pots and pans.
The oven offers a myriad of choices including convection, roasting, delay, cook and hold, proofing, drying, a "favorites" setting, thaw and serve, sabbath mode, meat probe, pastry, and rapid preheat. There are three racks in the oven.
The warming drawer has a high and low setting. It is a wonderful feature. I use high if I am going to keep food in there for less than 15 minutes as it will continue to cook the food it is so warm. I usually use the low setting as it is adequate.
This may or may not be a drawback depending on how much effort is too much for you: The cooktop is fairly easy to clean, but you should not allow food that has fallen on hot burners to remain there as it will cook on the next time you use it. I clean the top after every use and make sure it is perfectly clean. I have had it a year and the top looks brand new. It is extra work, but at least you can get the food off when you clean it immediately. You cannot slide pots/pans across the top as it will scratch the glass (according to the manual). I have not tried it so I don't know if that is true or not.
Problems: 1. The oven handle is made of brushed stainless and extends out two inches from the door. This is a problem for us because the range is 12 inches from the corner formed by the two countertops. A drawer hits the handle and cannot be fully opened. We failed to notice this when shopping. Be aware of the extension.
2. One of the burner knobs broke when I passed by and it got snagged on my shirt. The knobs stick out a bit. They are made of cheap plastic that is made to look like stainless. I cannot believe a $1500+ range has such cheap knobs!
3. Be careful in cleaning the oven door. The sleek look of the door is from the exterior glass panel. There is a minute gap between the glass and the door and water or cleaning fluid can drip down between. It spoils the look of the oven...you can clean it by removing the oven door and unscrewing the door from the panel and cleaning the inside. Be careful not to shatter the front panel!!
4. I just had a service call on one of the burners...the large burner on the right front has three sizes. The inner burner is not working. They will have to replace the switch and the burner. I am thankful that I am still under the one year warranty but I cannot believe that this very expensive range has already broken!!
UPDATE!!!!!!!!! 5. The triple burner and switch broke in August 07...still under year warranty. We are still trying to get repair (9/11/07) but the parts they ship are broken. The first service call was 8/24/07 and the technician ordered parts. The parts did not come on time and we had to reschedule the 9/1 service date for 9/8. When the repairman came, he could not do the repair because the part was damaged. Ordered a new burner. The burner came tonight and it is also damaged in the same way!! So now we have to reorder and wait until 9/22 for repair. This is completely RIDICULOUS!!
