| menomonee1's Full Review: Dirt Devil M084015 Touch Up Upright Vacuum |
I decided it was time for a new vacuum cleaner when the two vacuum cleaners I already own both started breaking down at the same time. One of them is a Bissell Power Clean and the other is The Boss by Eureka. These two were eliminated from my search for a new vacuum for the following reasons.
The Boss by Eureka.
1. Power cord is way to short. Even in an average size room, we had to go from power outlet to power outlet to vacuum the carpet.
2. Weak motor that didn't have the power to properly clean. To clean a room you had to vacuum over the same spot several times and then reach down and pick up by hand what it would not.
3. Brush belts burned up at a much higher then average rate.
4. After one year of use the vacuum will no longer turn on. Bad power switch I believe.
The Bissell Power Clean.
1. Bad design on vacuum cleaner bags. Half the time the vacuum cleaner bag would tear trying to install.
2. Cheap plastic construction of the handle. We had to super glue the handle back on several times.
3. Hose attachment kept pulling out of the vacuum and would have to be screwed back on while doing stairs.
4. Would shoot out a cloud of dust every time it was turned on. I had to re-dust after vacuuming.
The criteria I set for the new vacuum were simple.
1. Had to be bagless. I have spent to much time trying to change bags and always make a mess while taking off a used one.
2. Had to have at least a 12 amp motor for sucking up dirt. I have 3 children, 2 dogs, and 2 cats. My carpets get dirty.
3. A HEPA filter to make sure it did not put dust particles back into the air.
The vacuum we chose was the Dirt Devil Vision Vacuum M086900. Out of the box the only assembly was 2 screws to attach the handle to the base, and I was ready to go. We had just used our old Bissel Power Clean to vacuum the carpet earlier in the day, but I just had to try out this new vacuum. "Damn, where is the power switch? Honey, hand me the owners manual please. Well, that is a strange place to put the switch."
I was very surprised to see that after vacuuming a carpet that I thought was clean, the container was filled with 2" of dust, dirt, and hair that I had not seen. You could really feel the suction as it cleaned the carpet. "Dear, could you make a mess on the carpet so I can vacuum it up please?"
So far I have not had any problems at all with this vacuum, and it has picked up everything in its path. OK, it did not pick up the cat when I tried to run it over, but lets be reasonable.
The Features
1. Bagless. When you finish vacuuming, just snap off the dirt container and empty into the trash. I use an outside trash container so that I don't take the chance of putting the dust right back into the house.
2. HEPA Filter Cartridge. This traps 100% of all pollens and ragweed. It also claims to trap 99.97% of all dust and allergens. My wife suffers from allergies, so the last thing I want in my house is a lot of dust.
3. Swivel Casters instead of back wheels. This is great. Instead of dragging the back of the vacuum cleaner around to hit the carpet at a different angle, the swivel casters allow the back end to go side to side.
4. 12 amp motor. Since the motor on the vacuum is what gives you the power, the stronger the motor, the more dirt it will pick up.
5. 32 foot power cord. This allows me to do a full room without having to change power outlets.
6. 16 foot hose with the normal attachments and a handle on the hose. Not only do you get the normal attachments for doing stairs and furniture, but also a wedge shaped attachment for doing corners. The cleaning wand is telescoping so you pull it out to how long you need instead adding pieces together.
These were just the features that I really liked. You will also find the normal features you find on most vacuum cleaners such as a light, and bumper guards to protects your furniture and wall trim.
Now on to what I don't like about this vacuum.
1. Location of the power switch. Instead of placing it on the handle, or a foot switch on the base, here you will find it on the side just above the filter. Just a bit of a reach.
2. You can not turn off the cleaning brushes while using the attachments. To make sure the cleaning brushes don't wear a spot in your carpet while using the cleaning hose, you need to set the height adjustment all the way up to make sure it is not making contact with the carpet.
This is not a light vacuum cleaner. With the 12 amp motor and all the attachments it weighs in at 17 pounds. I know it sounds heavy, but with the swivel casters on the back, this vacuum handles with ease.
I would highly recommend this vacuum to anyone who suffers from allergies, have numerous pets, or lives in an extremely dusty part of the country like we do. Ever spend a summer in Kansas?
