Dirt Devil Handheld Vacuum: A Classic Cleaning Device That Works Great

My mother is coming to visit. Tomorrow. This means two things: 1) I am sporadically cleaning the house like a madwoman. In fits and bursts I run about dusting, vacuuming, spraying things and wiping them down. And 2) In between those little bursts are long periods of procrastination. I tend to spend those times here at Epinions writing.

I just finished using our Dirt Devil handheld vacuum on both sets of stairs in our house and I am reminded again just why I love that little sucker.
About Dirt Devil & Their Handheld Vacuum
Dirt Devil is a part of the Royal Appliance company. In 1984 they launched this little handheld that they call their "classic". It's the flagship product for their company and they claim that it's the largest selling handheld vacuum in the United States with more than 23 million sold. These small vacuums retail for $25 - $29 dollars.
This vacuum has a lightweight design and a nice long 20' cord that will take you up and down a flight of stairs, so long as there's a plug near them. The vacuum has a 3 amp motor and the six inch wide wheel brush is belt driven and sucks up dirt and dog hair quite nicely from carpets.
Using the Dirt Devil Handheld Vacuum
I use this vacuum all around the house and in our cars. It works great on upholstery but mainly I use it for the stairs. I hate hauling a full-size vacuum cleaner up and down stairs to clean them. I hate that worse than just about any other household chore. So I keep the Dirt Devil Handheld Vacuum in the guest bedroom closet near the stairs, so I can pull it out and vacuum the stairs in just a few minutes.
The cord is long but it can get in the way and can also become unwieldy at times. We have fifteen stairs on each flight and I vacuum across the top of the stairs and I also vacuum the vertical side as well. It's a trivial matter to just turn this lightweight vacuum on its side to vacuum the edge of the stair above the one I'm working on. Sometimes there will be pet hair so embedded in the crease of the carpet on the stairs that I have to scrape it out with my hand before running the Dirt Devil over it. I can knock out fifteen stairs in between 5 and 10 minutes. It's so quick that every time I do it I find myself wondering why I don't vacuum the stairs more often. Oh yeah, that's right. I'm lazy.
The red cloth bag on the back peels back to reveal a small paper bag that fits over the motor housing. You can buy refill bags for the Dirt Devil hand vac almost anywhere and they're not very pricey. I'll get several months of use out of a single bag, vacuuming the stairs a couple of times a month.
The motor is powerful and noisy. It's not something you'll want to be running when everyone's trying to watch television or you're near someone who is on the phone. The high pitched motor really cranks when the unit is turned on.
Accessories and Parts
You can purchase accessories and parts for this vacuum direct from Dirt Devil. They offer the following accessories and replacement parts. As for the accessories, I've never purchased any of them, so I can't vouch for how well they may or may not work.

- Revolving Brushroll $6.99
