Hoover Windtunnel Supreme

a Very Helpful Review

I have only had this vacuum about 6 weeks, so I've rated the durability average, but I really can't judge fairly at this point. I did feel I could add a bit to the other review in terms of features and performance however.

First of all, I love the Dirt Sensor. When the green light goes on, you know your carpet is clean. And the positive reinforcement -- how often do you get that when you clean? The Sensor doesn't work when you are using the attachments however -- it will sense the carpet on which the vacuum is sitting, not the upholstery or whatever that you are cleaning with the attachment.
My old vacuum had a "hot" smell when I used it, which I later learned meant that the dust was coming out through the exhaust (it had no filters). I don't get that smell at all with this machine, so I know the filters must be doing their job.
Hoover has a great system called a "Cleaning Perfomance Rating" which is helpful in comparing the various Hoover models. The Windtunnel Supreme is rated 26 -- I'm not sure what their top rating is, but the highest I saw was 28 for $100 more.
In terms of the light to indicate when the bag was full, the other reviewer mentioned that hers didn't go on after not changing the bag for a year!! I thought my bag seemed pretty full after 3 or 4 uses and the light wasn't going on, but I thought I would let it go a few more times -- the bags aren't cheap and I thought maybe I had been changing them too often in my previous vacuum. It turns out that the "light" is really more of a meter and only goes on when the vacuum is running -- the air pushes a little red piece up into the window and the fuller the bag, the higher up it goes. It is a bit awkward to see while you are vacuuming, as it is positioned on the front of it and you are looking down at it at a weird angle. The manual doesn't explain this either -- it was only by chance that I noticed it.
The vacuum has what are called "edge groomers" that allow you to vacuum right up along a wall or piece of furniture and get it clean -- a nice feature I never would have gone looking for.
The final thing I like about this vacuum is that the cord is very long so I can vacuum the entire apartment without having to change outlets.
The cons are pretty minor. As I mentioned, the light to indicate that the bag is full is a bit hard to see, and the on/off switch located on the front of the handle is a little hard to find in an "emergency" (I'm used to a foot control). It may just be a matter of getting used to it.
I found the bags difficult to change for small hands -- they're pretty wide and hard to get your hand around to smoosh it onto the holder. I also have some trouble opening the door. I've only changed it once, so again, it may be that I just don't have the technique down.
The bags are fairly expensive - around $8 for 3 and I had to change it after about 4-5 vacuumings (newer carpet/lots of loose fuzz). I didn't want a bagless because I thought emptying it would be gross, so this was a conscious trade-off. The filters are about $10 for 2 but they are washable. I haven't attempted to remove or clean them yet.
Overall, I am really happy with this vacuum cleaner. It is the last thing I wanted to have to buy, but now that I have, I think it was money well spent.
