gp4evr's Full Review: Kirby G5 Bagged Upright Vacuum
When my husband and I purchased our first home we also purchased our first vacuum. It was one of those water canister models. After a few years though, it died. I borrowed my girlfriends Kirby for a few days till I could shop for a new vacuum. WOW! I had never used a vacuum like this before. I was amazed at how powerful it was and how well it cleaned our carpeting. I couldn't wait to buy one for myself.
It is strange sometimes how cosmic forces are at work among us, for as I was using my borrowed Kirby that week and deciding I had to have one, my doorbell rang and who should be standing there but a Kirby salesman!
He demonstrated his model which was several years newer than my girlfriends. He showed me the other things the vacuum could do and all the attachments etc. I was ready to buy this wonderful vacuum immediately. The only shocker was discovering the price! I was literally in shock for a few minutes. But I was determined to own one!
So, after some negotiation on the price, I signed a payment plan. I was very happy with the job that Kirby did. That was 20 years ago. It never failed me, right up to the day (15 years later) I upgraded to my Kirby G5. I have had the G5 for 5 years now.
The G5 was an improvement on the older model I had, in that it had a more powerful motor and some slight design modifications, but most notably it had a self propelled switch. The handle also detaches and the Kirby G5 can be converted into a portable cleaner for mattresses, carpeted stairs and automobiles.
The older model did give you a workout pushing and pulling. It is a heavy vacuum cleaner. Using the self propel feature, it takes very little effort to vacuum.
As I stated before it really sucks (lol). It has very strong suction. It will lift your carpet right up if it isn't nailed down and beware not to get too close to small pets!
One sticking point for many people may be the price. It is expensive. I was willing to pay however because I know I will get every pennys worth & more. I have noticed on the internet that used Kirbys can be picked up for half of what I paid for mine. And, I would not hesitate to buy a used Kirby. They are very well built and I wouldn't be surprised if mine outlived me!
The G5 comes with a variety of attachments, like the hard surface nozzle, duster brush, upholstery nozzle, crevice tool, wall & ceiling brush, massage cap,inflator/deflator tool,and a portable sprayer.
With some of the optional accessories on the Kirby G5, you can also shampoo your carpet, wax & buff a hard floor, turbo sand ...turbo polish...and tubo scour, and give an orbital massage. With all these extra goodies, keep in mind though that the main job we all usually want done and done well is a good vacuuming.
