jgpingpong's Full Review: Kirby G5 Bagged Upright Vacuum
We bought the G5 unit back in 1996 of course from a pushy salesman. Since we all know how that all goes, and how that is the most disatisfying part of this vacuum, I will not mention it from here on.
So first the design. This definatly is not like any other vacuum on the market (then and now). The machine has done well overtime, the only complaint is that one of the cord wraps have broke making it difficult to store. It was surprising when it occurred, but this is one of only a few parts made of plastic. Everything else has held up well, and is still as sturdy as the day we bought it.
We have never had to bring it in for service at all. It has never clogged, well only once when I accidentally sucked up a sock. We still have the original brush and belt still in use. I don't think we have ever had a vacuum last this long. The suction power has not diminished at all.
This machine does what it claims, as well as what others have stated. It really does clean very well, getting all the debris in one swipe. The brush is powerful thus grooming the carpet nicely.
Now the biggest drawback is all those accessories. You have the caddy then the separate box for the shampooer which has at least 7 additional parts. It has become so troublesome to get these out then store them again that they are rarely used. Once you use it once or twice, using the attachments isn't difficult, just hard to store and get to get the energy to use them.
The shampooer does a wonderful job but it is a bit bulky. Sometimes it works right, sometimes it doesn't. Usually we use a Bissel steam cleaner since it is much easier to use. Plus you can only use the dry foam which is not only expensice but also hard to come by.
Luckily bags are available at our neighborhood vacuum shop, but it is very expensive. It seems as they are worth it, however, as it does a good job of trapping in the dust.
Overall I don't think we will ever get another vacuum. If this one eventually breaks down, we will deifnately consider purchasing another Kirby.
