jwpearce's Full Review: Kirby G5 Bagged Upright Vacuum
We purchased the Kirby G5 vacuum in 1997. Horrendously overpriced, I'm still not sure how we ended up paying over $1,000 for a vacuum cleaner (note to anyone considering, the price IS negotiable).
We have used this vacuum regularly for a decade now. It's survived two shelties and two children. It has never lost suction. The better features include strong suction, lays down almost flat to go under furniture, attachments fairly easily attached, doubles as a blower/inflator of children's blow-up pool floats, and versatility.
The regular vacuum head can be used with the brush rotating for carpet, or still for on hard floors. There is an attachment that allows you to use the cleaner like a canister vac, which does a better job on hard surfaces. There are several other attachments, including a "zip brush." Ours died after five years, but until that time did a great job on upholstery.
The bads include price of machine, some difficulty in getting supplies such as bags and belts, and that despite the huge price tag and promises of the salesperson, it is not indestructible.
This machine is so terribly heavy that I just purchased a second machine for our upstairs (a Dyson). It also needs to go to the shop, several things have degraded over the years. The shift pedal you use to go into power assist fell off; one of the holders for the power cord is broken off, and the cord is frayed in two places. Considering 10 years of heavy use, however, I am sure that's much better performance that I would have gotten from a cheaper model.
If you like you use your vacuum to clean more than floors, this may be the machine for you. It's very useful for doing everything from drapes to blowing the leaves off your driveway. If you only need a basic floor cleaner, you might fare just as well with a cheaper model (of which you could purchase three for what a Kirby will cost you).
