Lately we were having some problems with our old Kenmore cloths washing machine. Whites were coming out clean but they had small gold colored spots on them. We finally discovered that this was coming from the holes on the basket where the ceramic material had come off and the steel had started to rust. We called the service department and were told that it was going to cost somewhere around $175 to get our 16 year old washing machine fixed. The decision was made that it was time to look for something new. My wife finally decided that we would replace our machine with a new Kenmore 3.0 cu. ft. Super Capacity Top Load Washer Model 22442.

We went to our local Sears and began the shopping and pricing process. We knew the basic features we wanted but we were not willing to pay a high price for these features. We did not need all the fancy extras, just a basic washer that could do everything from whites to delicates. We were surprised at the price ranges there were just for clothes washers. They ranged from $229 to $799 and a couple were even higher priced. When we were having a problem deciding (the expensive ones had what we wanted and the cheap ones did not). The saleswoman suggested that we go to the local Sears (scratch and Dent) center near our home. This is where Sears brings machines that were delivered with minor blemishes in the ceramic finish or had dents in the exterior. Personally I do not care very much about what a washer looks like in our laundry room. We do not entertain there very often so it really does not matter.
This Sears scratch and dent store also had some of the older models that were less popular at really low prices. My wife found the one she wanted almost at once. It was the Kenmore 3.0 cu. ft. Super Capacity Top Load Washer Model 22442. I could not find anything wrong with it, except a small dent near the base on one side, but they had reduced the price by $75 which brought it down into our price range of $375. She made her decision.

Another nice deal we ran into was that they were offering free delivery. This saved us $30. They made the appointment and came out to the house. We paid them to remove the old washer and dispose of it for us. It took the two men only a few minutes to remove the old washer. This was the last thing that was easy. When they started to put the front legs on the machine, the first one went in easily but the second took 10minutes. The delivery man had to use vice grips to get the leg in. Once these front legs were in the read self-leveling legs would be used to get the machine level. When he was finished I asked about what if I had to remove the legs and I was not very happy. He said he would call his supervisor and I could talk to her. She offered me an additional $75 (in the form of a gift card) if I took the washer. Alright!
Now the machine would only cost $300.
My Wife's Opinion
Since I'm not the one that does the clothes washing I asked my wife to contribute her viewpoint. Actually she has forbid me from doing laundry just after we got married and I have not done any since. I can't understand why she felt this way. I was just doing underwear with pillow cases.
The Wife's Opinion
This machine is easy to load and quiet to run. My old machine made so much noise we could hear it upstairs. Our new Kenmore 3.0 cu. ft. Super Capacity Top Load Washer Model 22442 is so quiet we can't hear it even in the next room. It holds a large load of laundry and that's important with a husband and two kids who go through jeans at the rate of a pair a day. I've done 1 load with all the sheets and pillow cases from a queen sized bed and two twin beds all at once. The machine is well balanced and doesn't shake during the spin cycles.
The only complaint that my husband has it that this model is not very energy efficient. The rating is in the upper half of the energy scale that comes with the machine. To be honest, I did not notice this rating when we were shopping and neither did he.
The spin cycle gets all the water out of the cloths which I think reduces dryer time and energy usage. I do not use liquid bleach very often so I have not used the dispenser yet. I also use fabric softener sheets instead of liquid fabric softener so there is another feature that I do not use. I am sure that both features are very convenient and I may try them sometime later on.
I'm very happy with this machine and the job it does.
As my wife said, the only thing I had a problem with, is the machine's energy consumption. This may have been why this machine was at the Sears Scratch & Dent store in the first place. Neither of us remember it being in the regular Sears store when we were initially shopping. We've always had good luck with Sears products and I believe that our new Kenmore 3.0 cu. ft. Super Capacity Top Load Washer Model 22442 will not be an exception.
