Pros: Large tub
Cons: Poor quality and performance.
The Bottom Line: Do not buy a Maytag!
Why? If it does not perform as expected, is poor quality, requires constant service, why own it?

| ssea's Full Review: Maytag Neptune⢠MAH5500B Front Load Washer |
Do not buy a Maytag till they restore their quality! I tried three Neptunes - and after 3 I said "no more!" Each replacement machine got worse. Does this mean they are sending you refurbished models or seconds?
The expensive Neptune has the same poor quality as the cheaper top loader, Performa, and its higher top loader counterpart, the Atlantis -- which they are still manufacturing with the same defects. (Eat clothes, shred clothes, rip out zippers, doesn't clean properly).
Problems I encountered:
1) Control panels go bad within a very short time (2 loads and done),
2) Door latches need to be replaced.
3) Does not clean properly, 2 out of 3 machines - had 3 neptunes. Only one cleaned the clothes. Others left clothes "Noticeably dirty!" Would not remove stains.
4) Eats clothes due to rough edges, screws not recessed enough or properly, and gaps betweens beater bars and back of tub. Threads of ripped clothing were stuck between these same bars and back of tub so there was no question of where the ripping of the clothes came from during that wash load. Check your jeans for wear marks when machine stops. Also material around elastic parts. Noticed clothes becoming visibly thinner after only a few washings.
5) Machines have an "inside shake" due to ... maybe the design changes around the pump area when going into the high speed spin cycles.
6) Very possible mold problem due to no air getting into machine, which can be corrected by owner when they unscrew the light bulb and leave door cracked between wash loads.
But you know they probably made that light stay on so you had to close the door due to the possibility of kids crawling into the machine and locking themselves inside. But hey -- the kids could just open the door and pop in anyways, unless you code it to not open unless you use the special code.
So the question is: 1) would you use that special coding? 2) and if not, can the kids push the door open from the inside if they do crawl inside and close the door??
Something to think about! Hmmm . . .
7) I had one machine that wrung out clothes properly and got fantastic drying times of approximately 10 minutes -- twice! Then everything went "wacko" and that was the end of clothes being wrung out properly ever again on any of the Neptunes. That was the good machine that needed the control panel and door assembly fixed after 2 wash loads.
8) Washing times were way over what I had previously experienced with top loader! To do a presoak, which is necessary to ensure cleaning of really dirty items (or towels), and a higher than normal wash cycle selected, expect 88 to 96 minutes minimum.
9) Fading and shrinkage - due to water temps - the warm is hotter than I had previously experienced, obvious by the shrinkage and fading never experienced before.
So if it doesn't clean properly, ruins your clothes, is always being repaired, doesn't save you money, why own it?
