| ledford1000's Full Review: Whirlpool Calypso GVW9959K Top Load Washer |
This washer works differently than most washers being it has no agitator. A wash plate on the bottom of the basket creates a motion that rolls, lifts, and bounces the clothes through a water and detergent mixture that is continuously reapplied. The laundry products are diluted with fresh water and added at the proper time, the water level is adjusted automatically, and the incoming water temp is sensed and maintained at the proper temperature. For example when using assured water temp on cold/cold, warm water is added to maintain a temp of 75 degrees so detergents will properly dissolve. When a wash cycle is started an estimated time remaining for the cycle will display. The time will count down to the end of the cycle. You can customize your wash cycles with soak, extra rinse, extended spin and rinse and spin only. If you want to use chlorine bleach you have to remember to pick the "whitest whites" cycle so the washer knows to release your bleach. If you were to have selected "normal" wash, the bleach would not be released since most people use the normal cycle for colored clothes. I love the touchpad controls, just push what cycle you want and pust start, the machine does all the rest. I was skeptical of the machines cleaning abilities since it using 50% less water, but every item has came out the same or better than our old whirlpool, which was still going strong, however its dryer partner could go no more after 19 years of service. Another thing I've noticed is the Calypso seems to keep the load balanced better, I have yet to have to go and re-position clothes. Washing big comforters is no problem for this machine, it has a "bulky items" cycle and cleans well. New update: we have had the electronic controls, U-Joint assembly, and drain pump all go out after a year.
