Theres nothing more manly in the world than barbequing. Well, perhaps drinking Old Styles in the bleachers at Wrigley Field or maybe chopping down a tree with your bare hands. So, when Joubert and HawgWyld announced their Manly Write-Off, I knew that a grill would be my entrant into the festivities.
Grills come in all shapes and sizes. You have your charcoal grills and your gas grills. Some have one rack and some have more. Others even have side burners and attached smokers. Others are convenient and practical and the Weber Gas Go-Anywhere Grill is just that. Its the perfect grill for home or on the road.
The first thing you will notice about the Weber Gas Go-Anywhere Grill is that you must assemble it. Luckily, its not a full size grill so there are not too many parts to assemble. There are probably more than you would expect, but its still rather easy. It will take about 30 minutes to put together and then youre ready to grill! You wont need any special tools to put it together---only a screwdriver and possibly some pliers. It stands about 3 feet tall and takes up very little space. It's ideal for apartments or camping trips.
The set up of the grill is pretty simple. There is a burner in the bottom of the grill. That is covered by a flavorizer. It is designed to vaporize the juices that your meat leaks, emit smoke and then create a perfect barbeque flavor. Then, on top of that, sits the grill itself. The actual cooking size is 160 square inches. Its big enough to cook 3-4 average size hamburgers and 2 good size steaks. One of the neat things about the grill is that the legs actually serve as handles. Just flip them up around the grill and its ready to travel.
The operation of the grill is extremely easy. You will need to purchase a propane tank to fuel the grill. They are inexpensive and can be purchased at your neighborhood grill supply store, Target or even many sporting goods stores for about $2 per tank. Then, you will need to screw the tank onto the grill. This process can be a little challenging. The directions mention using a little bit of Vaseline on the thread to help with the process. Believe it or not, it actually helps. Once you get the tank securely attached, turn the gas control knob to the desired setting. Next, just press the ignition button and your grill is lit. Now, I must say my ignition button broke after a few months of heavy usage. Its not a big deal because you can light the grill with a match or one of those lighting sticks. Be extremely careful if you use a match to do the lighting. I would highly recommend using a lighting stick.
Now, since your grill is lit, the big question comes uphow does it cook? Well, it cooks surprisingly well. The grill gets extremely hot very quickly and thats wonderful if youre in a bit of a hurry. One thing to be careful of is the handle on the lid. It gets a tad hot. Youll probably need a mitten or towel to help prevent yourself from getting burned. You can adjust the gas via the control knob to regulate the heat. This is important because hamburgers, steaks, chicken and seafood all require different techniques and temperatures when you grill them. Youll have to experiment a little to get the proper cooking time, but soon youll get the hang of it. The tanks last about 10-15 hours of actual grilling time. I would definitely recommend having an extra one around in case it runs out will cooking. Once you get the hang of it, your food is going to come off tasting great.
The grill is also quite easy to clean. The grill itself just needs to be scraped with a traditional grill brush. Youll also need to do the same with the flavorizer. There will also be some residue underneath the flavorizer. All you need to do is empty the grill and flip it over and its clean.
Overall, the Weber Gas Go-Anywhere Grill is a solid investment. Its portable, easy to use and cooks extremely well. There are a few problems like the hotness of the handle, attaching the propane tank and the ignition buttons possibility of breaking. None of those will prevent you from having a high quality barbeque. Also, the price at about $40 may be a tad high for some. Keep in mind that a traditional large grill is much more expensive so if you dont have the funds, this grill is still quite a bit cheaper. If youre looking for a portable grill for home or for traveling, dont be afraid to purchase this wonderful Weber product.
