| mrjyoung's Full Review: Weber-Stephen Products Genesis Gold C Premium (LP)... |
After much review, just bought one. Had 2 Ducane's previously, with many problems on the second.
Comparison/Basics: Three horizontal burners, plus one side burner. The gold B does not have the side burner. Although the Gold C is more expensive than the Silver C and it looks identical, the Gold C has stainless steel flavorizer bars, grates, and hood. I am told the stainless steel lasts longer. The side burner is great when it's really hot and you don't want to heat up kitchen. Also, it allows you to remain outside. The lp tank sits on a stand that shows you, from the changing weight, how full the tank is, and this is a must. No more weighing the tank before a party. The push button ignition allows you to light the grill once, and then use the buttons to turn the other two burners on and off. Side burner has a separate ignition. The spider guards so far have kept the spiders out. If you're used to a grill that doesn't get too hot, beware of this one. I left the new cover near it and it partially melted, and the housing is too hot to the touch even on the bottom. It cools down very fast. This was never the case with the Ducane. It includes a thermometer on the hood that shows you how hot the inside is, and also doubles as a removable meat thermometer. The side board and two lift up shelves come in handy.
Cover Confusion: Note about the premium cover (premium in that it goes practically to the floor): Model 9859 is the premium cover for the 2002 model Gold C -- 59.99 at Amazon, 54.99 at Home Depot. Amazon, and others, list one for Gold C that is $99. That is for the older, pre-2002 Gold C Model, which does not have the stainless steel hood. You can verify this at Weber's web site. The $99 model will not fit the 2002 Gold C as well. The Gold and Silver C in 2002 are the same size exactly. As stated above, the differences between the Gold and Silver C are in the stainless steel insides and hood, which have no bearing on cover size. As of April 25th, the picture above this rating in epinions is also of last year's model -- note the dark hood and missing fold-down counter space. Perhaps Weber should have been more clear, or changed the name, but it seems that not everyone has the latest picture of the Gold C, nor do they put the right cover with it.
Results/Test: We were concerned at first, under the impression that without lava rocks, the taste would be off. The first real test was filet mignon last week. The high heat really did sear in the flavor and juices. It tasted notably better than we recalled. The built in warmer allowed us to remove corn and keep it warm while the steaks finished. Finally, we had something grilled that actually had the grill marks. The outside thermometer went over the 500 degree mark. The grill starts up easy.
I called local, reliable places and mostly all sold the grill or were negotiable knowing others did, for $599 NY Tri-state area. Although I paid tax, was able to negotiate (or was their policy already) assembly, delivery, full tank of gas, and premium cover for an extra $60.
Time will tell how durable, but other reviews tell me it will last. In terms of ease of use, heat, etc., it's great, and worked from the start (although only a few weeks old.)
Be sure, if you buy their cover, that you get the right one, per my note above. Their cover also has velcro on bottom to keep it from blowing off, and is a snug fit. The stainless steel hood does catch finger prints, but easily removable. The fact that you can take the whole thing apart without tools/aggravation to clean, is great. The flavorizer bars prevent flare ups. You will, however, get that small flame occasionally on grate.
