Weber Gas Grill - Do You Want One That Will Last?
Written: Apr 16, 2005
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
My prior grilling experience had been limited to the charcoal grills, especially the kettle style. Recently, due to a temporary move, I have been fortunate to gain experience and knowledge on the Weber Genesis Silver A propane grill.
Features
2 stainless Steel burners
BTU: 22,000
Crossover ignition system
Flavorizer bars
Cast iron cooking grills - 350 square inches
Warming rack areas - 108 square inches
Thermometer
Tool holders
Granite style side table
Drip pan holder and pan
Propane tank
First Impressions
The grill sits outside all year where we are staying and is exposed to all four seasons of the weather without any covering whatsoever. The outside of the grill has absolutely no rust, however the cooking grills showed surface rust. Using a stiff wire brush and with tough scrubbing, the rust scraped off.
The Weber propane grill appeared to be built as solid as our experiences with their charcoal grills. The lid is built sturdy and stays in place when lifted without being flimsy and fits snuggly when closed. The lid handle is large and comfortable.
The grill offers 2 burner rods running under the base of the casing, each controlled by separate adjustable temperature controls located on the right of the grill on a flat open surface which adjust from low to high. Also located on the flat open surface is the Crossover ignition switch. Weber uses flavor bars that chris-cross across the bottom of the casing above the gas rods. These rods prevent flare-ups and also distribute the heat evenly.
The temperature gauge sits on the lid. On the left is a granite style side table which is heat resistant. Underneath is a drip pan holder and pan and along the bottom is a wire rack the same size of the grill connected to the legs.
The whole grill is movable on wheels, however I would not call this style portable to carry to the beach or camping trips.
Upon inquiries, the lodging unit we are in has had this grill for about 5 years and has always sat exposed in the outdoor elements.
Grilling
Starting the grill was as simple as turning the propane tank on and flipping the ignition switch, then turning the burners on. It reached 400 degrees in approximately 5 minutes. Upon opening the lid, the temperature quickly went down to the 200 range and would climb again upon closure.
My first experiment was with thick filet mignon steaks on one burner and T-Bones on the other burner. The T-Bones, of course grilled faster and seared nicely. The filets soon followed and the taste tests began.
Although the steaks were delicious, I still love the taste from our charcoal grill over the propane grill. The searing is better on a charcoal grill and so are the flavors. Grilling on a propane grill tastes more like a restaurant style steak.
Next I tried chicken, ribs, and then hamburgers. All grilled and seared nicely but still, I missed that scrumptious barbeque grill taste that the charcoal grills provide along with the fabulous crunchy taste on the ribs and chicken.
All the meats did cook evenly and I was able to place smaller cuts that cooked quicker onto an area that kept them warm, rather than cook. The meats were tender and juicy.
The largest amount of people I have grilled for here is 8 and the grill had no problems accommodating the food.
Final Thoughts
Although I love the instant lighting of the Weber grill since it is so easy to start up, you just cannot compare the taste of food of grilling on a gas grill versus a charcoal grill. For serious barbeque lovers, nothing beats the taste of a charcoal grill and Weber does make an excellent one.
However, if I was totally against charcoal, I would definitely consider this Weber as a top choice, especially after seeing how well it is holding up without the proper maintenance. That is quality construction.
Warranty
Weber guarantees that the unit will be free of defects in material and workmanship as follows:
Flavorizer Bars: 1 year
Cooking Grates: 5 years
Burners: 10 years
Thermostat: 10 years
Recommended: Yes
Amount Paid (US$): 0.00
