| sbianchi's Full Review: Weber-Stephen Products Genesis Silver A (LP) Propa... |
It's been 5 years...my wife and I received a small charcoal grill as a wedding gift, and I've been itching to get a new one ever since. One that doesn't take an hour to heat up - one that's easy to start - once that has a cooking surface bigger than a dinner plate.
Now, you have to realize I have researchitis. This is a disease that makes you research items over and over until your wife is ticked off at you for weeks. It gets even worse in my case, because I research items EVEN AFTER I BUY THEM to make doubly sure I got a great deal.
The final straw came from my brother-in-law, who has had this model for 2 years now - and he told me that if I bought any other brand, I deserved the piece of junk that I would be saddled with. So, I took him at his word. AND BOY, AM I GLAD I DID. Here's why:
1. The starting system on this thing is great. It has "crossover ignition", which means it lights one burner, travels along the left side, and then lights the other burner. Think of it as a big "C". And the best part is that the button is easy to press and IT LIGHTS EVERY TIME. Owned a Sunbeam once, and the button broke after the 5th use. And it was a pain to press in.
2. How about those flavor bars! I don't know what genius thought this one up, but those special "flavor bars" at the bottom of the grill work like a charm. Somehow, they burn the juices from the meat (into some flavorful smoke) and make the meat taste better. The proof? My sister-in-laws kids love hot dogs BOILED (this is not a misprint), and never eat anything grilled. I cooked hot dogs on this grill for them one night, and they wolfed down 2 each (there's 5 kids in all) and wanted more!
3. Construction - this thing is built to last. The grill was a snap to put together (took me 10 minutes), and it even comes with the tools to do it in the box. Also, this comes with a Propane tank - most quality grills nowadays do not. You have to buy it separate, and that can be quite an expensive item.
4. Cast Iron grill plates - I talked with alot of people, and they mentioned for maximum durability and flavor, get a grill with cast iron plates. So, I bought this at Home Depot - they have an exclusive contract with Weber to offer these grills with cast iron plates - can't get them anywhere else that way.
Remember, the only difference between the "A" model which I bought and the others is:
The "B" model has another burner under the hood (total of 3) and extra shelf space on the side. That's $100 extra.
The "C" model is basically just the "B" model with a side burner. That's another $50 extra, which makes it $150 more than the "A" model.
For my money, the extra stuff isn't needed unless you grill 5 to 7 days a week.
The best part about this grill was what I paid. This was an early christmas gift from my parents - I was trying to price match this grill using an ad for K-Mart, who also had the grill on sale. Apparently, the girl at the register never took math in high school, because the final total (for a $350 grill plus 7% NYS tax) came to $259.16 - and to boot, Home Depot had a deal where if you buy the grill between July 3rd and the 7th, you get a free cover ($50) and grill set ($20). They even filled my propane tank for free!
Even if I had paid full price for the whole thing, it would have been worth it. I have never tasted food so good that had been cooked on a grill. Everything is juicy and flavorful.
Are there any downsides? Only two, that I can think of, and they're little nitpick items. One is that there is not enough side shelf space on this model. The "B" model comes with a bigger side shelf, and this helps when you are cooking the big meal and need an extra place to put another plate or some sauce. However, I wasn't going to spend another $100 for a shelf and another burner inside - the two burners work fine. The other item is where you hang the tools - there are only two hooks, and if you are like me, you need one for the spatula, one for the tongs, one for the fork and the last for the wire brush to clean the grill after you are done cooking. And for the most part, you can't double up utensils on the hooks - they're too small.
However, these are just little things that I can overlook. Take my advice - don't mess with anything else. Get this grill and you will never be disappointed!
