This processor is so versatile that we use it for not only cutting and grating vegetables but also for making bread and grating cheese!
1 - It grates cheese!
- Many of food processors don’t work very well on various types of soft cheeses such as mozzarella (read some of the other reviews if you don’t believe me). However, this one is an exception. We use it regularly (about once to twice a week) for this purpose and it grates well, with very little “wasted” mozzarella (this is the mozzarella that gets caught in the grate… which someone always steals as a before dinner snack!).
2 – It kneads bread!
- Although we only make bread a few times a year, this machine has no problems kneading the dough. It is done quickly and thoroughly (smoothly). Although we have a Kitchen Aid Mixer, we usually use this machine for any bread we make
Aside from those two special uses, it also is a great over all processor:
Ease of Use
- The pieces are easy to slide on and (usually) easy to remove. Which makes changing from grating cheese to chopping vegetables a breeze.
- Also, there is only one switch that has a low, off, high setting. You really can’t get any easier.
- Large Feed Tube - This is actually a big factor when picking a processor. Many machines have small feed tubes that you can barely fit anything in. You almost have to chop up the food before you use the processor! This machine however, is big enough for whole cucumbers
Safety
- From the container, to the feed tube, everything “locks” into place. If it is not locked down, the machine won’t start, thus preventing you from accidentally chopping a finger or some such.
- One Safety Tip - If you are concerned about safety, leave it unplugged. This way it cannot start “accidentally”. Although I haven’t found a way to get around the safety locks, that doesn’t mean a two-year-old won’t.
Durability
- My mother has had one for years and has had very few problems. The only thing that has happened is that the metal rod that connects the grater or blade to the machine came out once and hasn’t been the same since. Since then, it has been occasionally difficult to remove the grate. We wind up pulling on and banging it in the hopes this piece will loosen (which is really a testament to the durability of the rest of the machine.) We have tried oiling it repeatedly, but it still sticks. However this is the only problem we have experienced.
Clean Up
- Clean up can be a bit of a hassle as there are many pieces to clean. There is the slicer or grater you use, the container, the cover, the feed tube and the pusher. As a result, I only use it when I am sure that the amount of time I will spend cleaning it is less than the amount of time it would have taken me with a regular grater (for example, when you need to grate a whole pound of mozzarella!)
Price
- Fortunately, this seems to be one of those items that go on sale a lot at a numerous stores. If you are interested in purchasing one of these and don’t want to get it through the Internet, a store near you will probably put them on sale soon. I have seen them at about 40% off the list prices at stores from CostCo to Bloomingdale’s.
My mother has this machine and has had it for years. I believe this machine is so useful that I also purchased one for myself. I highly recommend it!
