Customer Service Experience:
Pros:Saves money & hassle, easy to calculate cost, professional service.
Cons:a lot more physical work than full-service movers.
The Bottom Line: We would absolutely use ABF again!
I've moved a few times, and have some good and not-so-good experience with moving companies, but my experience with ABF was by far the best I moving experience I've ever had! I will absolutely recommend ABF to anyone moving long distances! The staff were all friendly and courteous, they were on time, and the billing was spot on. We had an issue with our credit card (someone, not related to our transaction with ABF got a hold of the card number we'd booked our move on) - leaving us with a need to change our payment info while en route to our new home - and ABF was fabulous about it. They were flexible, offered us a few options and were patient as we worked out the payment methods.
The delivery driver was wonderful, on time, very professional, clean, knowledgeable and patient. I've only experienced this with one moving company before, and even then he didn't compare to the professionalism of the ABF driver.
Having read many reviews of ABF we wrapped our most precious stuff in plastic moving wrap (photo albums, soft furnishings, etc) and put plastic mattress bags on all mattresses and our couch (we put couch cushions in large trash bags) because I'd read a few reviews that talked about dirt and grit ruining items. We also covered our stuff with 5 mil plastic sheeting (the heavy duty paint drop cloth type). We had 2 boxes that did arrive with grit and dirt on them, but all of our contents were fine.
Originally we'd planned on using the entire length of the truck for our 3 bedroom home, but our amazing moving crew was able to fit our household contents into 14' of the truck by stacking it high & tight. We saved $2000 on our move by doing this. We easily had 3x the storage space of a u-haul truck, without the hassle of driving it ourselves.
We had furniture that was dinged and very minimal damage (by far the least damage I've ever experienced in a move), but I know it's because we packed that truck tight, and it's not surprising our soft pine table had a big ding on it (we didn't cover it in a moving pad, as we ran out).
The driver who delivered our truck on the receiving end was hilarious, friendly, professional, courteous, and very helpful. He managed to squeeze the giant truck into our little apartment parking space.
All of our contents were undisturbed when the truck arrived at our home. The billing was exactly what we'd expected for 14' - they didn't play any games with it.
The only downsides I found to ABF was that when booking, I asked if we would share a truck and the booking agent told me no (he meant we wouldn't share with someone else moving). I didn't know the right questions to ask - as it turns out the way ABF can afford to charge by the linear foot, is that they load any empty space with cargo, and it can be of any variety. Like I said before, we did have some grit on a couple of boxes, but we were diligent to pack everything well to protect it from too much dirt, and it paid off. Whatever cargo they had in our truck was worth the $2000 savings!
We were able to leave 3 days before our truck (we had it delivered on a Friday, loaded it on Saturday and left town that night), and take advantage of the 2 days grace period on the receiving end so we could enjoy our cross country drive without paying extra to store the trailer.
If I ever have to move again, ABF will be my first choice for moving companies.
