my husband and i were moving from south florida to chicago and knew we would have a one month old baby with us and so decided to hire someone to move us. we should have done it ourselves, no matter the ordeal with our baby because we have more headaches now, 7 months later, than there is room to describe here. we were not given an accurate estimate to begin with-i tried to avoid this by calling the atlas rep in chicago who supposedly owed my mom a favor. he assured me that the estimate would be close and that we wouldn't incur any additional charges. but on the day the movers came to pack things up, they informed me that they needed 16 additional boxes just for my pictures alone!!! i was told this would cost close to three hundred dollars more. i called the office in chicago only to have them tell me that if i didn't agree to pay more, the movers would LEAVE MY HOUSE and i would be on my own. like that's an option-please!!!!!! so i agreed to the additional cost so we could get moved. we had several things broken in the move and although atlas did come out to assess the damage, they repaired everything instead of replacing it and it looks terrible. as if this was not enough, when our things arrived in chicago, the driver only had himself and his 70 year old father to move everything in because whomever they were counting on to help them in chicago had bowed out. so they asked my husband to help.he agreed because he did not want it to take 3 days to move our things in but we were never credited anything for this. so we paid over six thousand dollars for a move that my husband had to take care of on the chicago end. not exactly good business. i have put in claims to atlas on their website, i have spoken to their "customer service" reps, i have sent letters to everyone i can think of and still no reasonable response. avoid this company at all costs-even if it means moving yourself. you will avoid so many headaches!
